I’m getting an oval moissanite from moissaniteco. The setting is custom (and very blingy) and there will be a halo for the center stone. Question is: do I go with the larger 9×7 or smaller 8×6? I’ve seen all the lovely ovals others have on this site but I’m still torn! Is 9×7 too big for my hands (size 7 but they are short and I wear size 5 1/2 gloves in the OR). I don’t plan on wearing my ring daily so I’m fine wit it being something I just wear for special occasions.

For a size 7, I don’t think 9x7mm is too big. I think that will look very proportional on you, but you mention that the setting is very blingy. Could you post the setting so we can see if that impacts the blinginess too much?

A 9×7 with a halo will be a nice size on a size 7 in my opinion. I think it will be perfect, not too big not too small.

I’m not sure that this will help, but I’m getting a round moissy double halo and the center stone is 6.5mm but the double halo is exactly 11m across. And it looks quite proportional for my size 7 finger, I think mine will also be considered blingy as it has 2 haloes and a diamonds shank. So if your oval is 9×7 depends on how big are the diamonds in the halo, so I would advise not to go too big on them and it should look fine. One thing I did, was ask my jeweler the dimensions of my halo and I made paper rings, put them in my finger and that’s pretty much how I decided the stone size. In any case I think 9×7 will be good for you. Hope it helps!

I just got my 7x5mm oval on Saturday and I’m a size 5. At first I was like OMG IT’S SO BIG, WHY DID I GET THIS SIZE! I was just wearing it around the house and I went to my mom’s house so I was basically staring at it the whole time. I thought I made the wrong choice not going with the 6x4mm but literally two days later I’m used to it and it feels like it fits perfectly with my hand. I wore it to work today and being out and about, my initial ‘shock’ has worn off.
So I say go with your gut and if you’re wanting something blingy, it’s better to think your ring is “omg too big!” because the size will grow on you vs being disappointed you didn’t get a larger one.
Also I don’t know what that site is called but there’s a site you can check the two carat weights on your size finger and compare. I wish I remembered the name…anyone else know?

This is the setting we picked out. No band (I’m hindu and plan on wearing the traditional necklace after we get married) and all my coworkers have stories where they almost lost their rings…..so I don’t even want to chance it! I’m just worried a 9×7 AND a halo will make the setting look tacky. Also the setting will be in yellow gold.
AND omg. Y’all are the best. Thanks for all the advice and pictures!

that’s beautiful!! I don’t think it will look tacky. If you’re worried though go with your gut and get the slightly smaller one 🙂 I don’t even think there’s that much of a size difference.

I’m a size 6.75 and have longer fingers and I have an 8×6 oval halo. I love the size, but sometimes I think the 8×6 ooks a little big with the halo–I can’t imagine it bigger. go with your gut! Btw your setting is beautiful!

I’m a size 8 and have a 9×7 with a halo, here’s a pic although I might have posted before (I just love it so much lol). It’s perfect for me, and I think if I’d have gone with the 8×6 I “might” have experienced some shrinkage. However you need to take a few things into consideration:
1) what’s considered “big” vs “too big” in your area and if you care
2) how low profile the setting is. Lower profile rings look smaller front-on but bigger from the side, and vice versa for high profile. For the record mine is pretty high profile
3) if you care a lot what other people will think of it. If you’re gonna worry people will think it looks tacky, get the smaller one.
4) if you’re going forever one vs any other type. I had a forever brilliant (got engaged before the forever one and there were no oval amoras) and the color eventually got to me and had to swap it out for a forever one. I love it now. Special cuts and bigger stones both show more color
Anyway, I would get a 9×7 and 8×6 cheap CZ ring and wear them around.

Just remembered I had bought an 8×6 oval from Overstock as a travel ring, so I took some pics. Sorry if they’re huge, I can never tell when I post from mobile if they’re too big or not.
It’s this one http://www.overstock.com/#/9576614/product.html

thanks so much for the pictures. Your ring is GORGEOUS. I do think the 9×7 is much more fancy on you than the 8×6 (maybe it is the setting as well:) )
Ugh cannot decide!
