Hello! I am new here, but I have been reading on here for a while for research. First, sorry this is so long, also sorry for any strange typos, I’m using my ipad and it is doing strange things and I don’t know why (it auto corrected “do” to “okie”).
My boyfriend and I have seriously started the search for an engagement ring!! We had somewhat of a shock when we first started talking about rings and we discovered the price of diamonds And I learned I would most likely not be receiving the 1 ct princess cut diamond in a pave halo that I dreamed of. I think he could probably afford it, but I just don’t want him to spend that much. After this I went on huge researching quest to find out how to get the best bang for our buck so to say. I kneve just about everything there is to know about diamonds (on paper) we haven’t actually gone to look at any in store because we didn’t want the sales person over our shoulder. What I found was a 0.74 ct I color VS2 ideal cut princess diamond from James Allen. It would be in a halo setting that I like and would LOVE to have, but not my dream setting. After doing some more research I discovered moissanite! I found a setting from Schubach’s jewelers that is basically my dream setting and with a 5.5 mm (1.05 ct equivalent) square brilliant moissanite it comes to $1,000 cheaper than the James Alleserving. Which sounds perfect! However I’d like to learn what you all think about your moissanite rings.
I’ve read that square brilliant moissanites do not look as nice as the rounds? Does anyone have a square brilliant and love or hate it? I’m looking at the forever brilliant 5.5 mm square brilliant.
I’ve also read that square brilliants are not like princess diamonds. I don’t own any diamond jewelry myself and I mostly love princesses because they are square (I feel like everyone has round). Did anyone else have this same feeling and go with the moissanite?
Also, how do forever brilliant square brilliant moissanites pass off days diamonds? I know this will spark debate on here, but I don’t necessarily want to lie and say its a diamond to everyone. I work with some very judgemental people (one guy spent $10,000 on his fiancé’s setting alone and came to work and told all of us about it, another girl flat out told her boyfriend that he couldn’t afford the engagement ring she wanted and not to even propose to her until he could) so I’d rather not go through the explanation that it is a moissanite with them because I don’t think they’d be very accepting. I would like to go with the don’t ask don’t tell plan. Since its a 1.05 ct equivalent I don’t expect there to be a lot of suspicion. Opinions on this?
Anyways I’m really leaning towards the moissanite ring, and I’ve heard nothing but excellent things about Schubach’s. I just wanted to get y’all’s opinions and and dealings with moissanite. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Any pictures as well! There isn’t much on square moissanite out there!
thank you so much!

@Kristyml287: Firstly, welcome to the hive!
I have a 3ct (9mm) Amora Old European Cut Moissanite & think it is simply devine! I used to own a loose 3ct Round Brilliant & liked it quite a bit less than my current OEC. The OEC cut can definitely pass for diamond, although I don’t pass mine off.
The square brilliant is, unfortunately, not amongst my favorite cut; especially compared to the princess cut that isn’t yet available in moissanite. Although, let me assure you that Schubach’s is an absolutely fantastic jewelers, so definitely continue to consider them.
The first few pics are of my OEC e-ring (the first pic the center stone is dirty), and the last pic is a comparison pic between a princess cut and square brilliant cut:

I have a 1ct princess cut moissanite, with diamond halo and pave band. The website pictures don’t do it justice – http://www.moissanitejewelryshop.com/index.php/design-your-moissanite-engagement-ring/moissanite-diamond-accent/riviera-vintage-moissanite-engagement-ring-1-20-carat-t-w-14k-wg-68218.html
It is 1.2 total weight and I love it. My rules was the ring had to be under $1k and this was, plus beautiful! It has a slightly warm tinge (yellowish) in some light but no one knows it isnt a diamond (that has admitted it at least!). The warm tinge is normal for moissanite.
Unfortunately, neither does the pic I have on hand… (the ring is not actually crooked, it’s the reglection/angle of the camera)

Some people don’t like the square cut but others live theirs and I’ve seen really pretty ones. I pulled some pics from online so you can see the difference in the cut. Both square, different cut. It’s up to you if you like it.

** Ack, Im using my phone so I got some typos. The square brilliant is on the right, princess cut is on the left. Ive seen way better square brilliants than the ones pictured. Good luck!! 🙂

I also considered a square cut moissanite but decided to go with a cushion. With what I’ve seen the square brilliant looks much nicer and would look ‘closer’ to a diamond. As far as schubachs goes: I highly recommend them. I’m in the process of getting a custom ring made and beth has been amazing. I started emailing her months before we were actually ready to start the process and there was never pressure to buy, just honest opinions based on her experience.

for my ering i only wanted a square cut stone. i LOVE msskeletonkeys ring though. i talked with schubachs girls about a square moissanite and they tried to talk me out of it,, but i KNEW what i wanted. the cut is different-it looks like a star in the middle. but thats one of the things i love most about it. i love it so much now i want a 3 square moissy ring! cant get enough. and pple have only ooed and ahhhed over my ring. i tell them its moissy bc seriously whats cooler than a space diamond?(nerd alert lol) anyway if you want a sb then GO FOR IT IM TELLING YOU ITS AWESOME!!!!!!!! moissy is a forever stone ive been wearing mine for a year and it still looks like the day i got it-even while dirty. no regrets here.

I have a forever brilliant square 1.7ct. Near colorless(G-I). The thing about the square moissinite, they do NOT look like a “diamond”. They have a weird snowflake look to them. Like a strange star. If you’re looking for something that looks like a “diamond” stick to round. I was very disappointed in the look. We paid $1550 for it. I wish we would’ve returned it before the 30 days. 🙁
