@pharmy: I have a moissanite ring, but I don’t know the answers to these questions. I’ve actually been wondering about the rhodium re-dipping thing since my ring is 14K white gold. But I’m sure some other bees have answers for you!

Edit: Here’s some info on cleaning moissanite. Personally, I’ve been using diluted Windex (ammonia) and a super soft-bristled brush to clean mine.

I think I heard that moissy’s should only get minimal heat– what you should tell the jeweler is to treat it like a ruby (I think. or I’m mixing it up with something else.)

If you haven’t already, you should try the boards over at betterthandiamond, they’ll probably know the answers to all your questions.

Found more info!

Durability is a material’s ability to remain intact or withstand exposure to temperature and chemicals. Moissanite can easily withstand temperature variations during the jewelry manufacturing process and repairs at a jeweler’s bench (unlike other gemstones such as cubic zirconia or emerald). In fact, Moissanite has a higher vaporization temperature than diamond and can withstand temperatures reaching 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

Moissanite is also very stable when exposed to various chemicals, solutions and acids typically used during both manufacturing and jewelry repair that commonly damage other less stable gemstones.

I don’t have a mira, but I have a 1.5 ct equivalent unenhanced moissy and can shine some light on this..

1. Can a white gold ring with moissanite be rhodium dipped without harming or changing the color of the stone?

Yes – I just got it done before my wedding to have it in top condition.  I will do so each year too to keep the white gold polished and shiney.

2. Can moissanite stand up to the heat of the torch that must be used to do any repair or setting work, like fixing a prong, etc?

Yes – My ring was custom built and had to withstand the heat to set it.

3. When cleaning a moissanite, does it need special treatment?

No – I clean it with a soft toothbrush and soapy water.  However, my jewler was really impressed with how a moissy doesn’t pick up as much dirt as other stones.

4. Will the color of the moissanite (amora enhanced) change over time?

Mine hasn’t, but I’ve only had it for just under a year.

Hope this helps 🙂

you only need to be careful with colored moissanite. if those are exposed to heat, they will turn back into their original white form, lol. but with regular ol’ clear moissanite, they’re hardier than diamonds.

No prob.

2. Can moissanite stand up to the heat of the torch that must be used to do any repair or setting work, like fixing a prong, etc?

As others said, if it’s color-treated moissy, or if it was “enhanced” through a coating process, you can’t heat it. Otherwise, moissy can withstand temperatures that would literally vaporize diamond.

3. When cleaning a moissanite, does it need special treatment?

I throw mine in the sonicator all the time. It’s practically as hard as a diamond. No special treatment except in the cases above.

4. Will the color of the moissanite (amora enhanced) change over time?

No.

Of course! It’s much harder than all other gemstones–a 9.25 on the Moh’s scale. Only diamond is harder at 10.0.

2. Can moissanite stand up to the heat of the torch that must be used to do any repair or setting work, like fixing a prong, etc?
Yep. It’ll actually withstand heat better than diamonds.

3. When cleaning a moissanite, does it need special treatment?
Not a bit.

4. Will the color of the moissanite (amora enhanced) change over time?
Moissanite will NEVER change color. Charles & Colvard, the only maker of moissanite, offers a lifetime guarantee on every stone that it will not change color or lose fire or brilliance.

Moissanite are NOT fake diamonds. They are a gemstone in and of themselves that are harder, more durable, and more sparkly than any other gemstone. Diamonds just barely have them beat in terms of hardness, but honestly, it’ll only make a difference if you own both a diamond and a moissanite for about 10,000 years.
