What a great post, I have several moissanite sets and my origins diamond set. I love my moissy sets and wear them more often than my diamond but I do embrace them as moissanite so that may be why I’m okay with it. I’m not sure how I would feel if I didn’t have my diamond and can only assume knowing myself I would want a diamond. I’m sure this post will help someone when deciding what to do because I have seen many bees that get moissanites and in the long run change to a diamond just to ease their minds.

Here’s a pic of my diamond and one of my newest moissanite ring. The diamond is a 1ct princess cut in white gold and the moissy is a 3ct asscher in yellow gold. Thanks for sharing this!

Great thread, I’ve been wanting a radiant or emerald cut ring so I thought I would go with moissanite and try to pass it as a diamond (to myself), but now I think I’d better wait until an anniversary and save up to get a diamond.

Yeah there is definitely a big difference! What are the specs of both stones?

Funny enough, in both of these examples I prefer the look of the moissy over the diamond, especially the asscher, it’s so dreamy! But I think pictures don’t often give each stone their due justice and show their glory. I have a moissy engagement ring and I love it as a moissy even though at times it does lack the depth of a diamond. I think this comes from it being rather big and I’ve learned that I prefer smaller stones despite having larger hands. I have my Grandma’s diamond so I have the best of both worlds! In hindsight, I think I would’ve loved a colored stone but I was so determined to have a “white/clear” stone. No regrets, just dreaming up an anniversary ring or push present one day ๐Ÿ™‚

kevinsbee :  not trying to hijack the thread, but your asscher ๐Ÿ˜  how do moissanite step cuts perform?  Do you still get the disco flashes as with other cuts?

I had the same dillemma! I love the history of moissanite and how its conflict free but I love the look of a diamond. After much research and YouTube video scrutiny, I went with a crushed ice elongated cushion and when I received it, it was just OK. Definitely not rainbowy, but then again, not really sparkly at all. I went to a local jeweller and she was showing me some diamonds because I was going to get it set locally and the comparison was SO STARK and obvious, the moissy just looked so overwhelmingly flat and “plasticy” compared to the diamond. I discussed with my SO and we returned the moissanite and I end up getting a lab diamond. We made a custom designed and made a super unique three stone ring with diamond trillion sides and an elongated cushion centre!

Of course the cost of the lab diamond was more $$ (more than triple the cost of the moissy) than the moissanite because we ended up getting a pretty large centre stone (1.8 carat), but in my heart of hearts I knew that spending a couple thousand on a moissanite ring now (and I know you can get cheaper with Chinese manufacturers but I wanted to go with a local jeweller and support local businesses) and likely seek to upgrade in the future, or spend more on the diamond ring of my dreams and never need to upgrade in the future. I do wonder if I liked rounds if I would have been okay with a round H&A moissy (IMO the cut that is remotely diamond-like), as of course they do look a bit different, but the comman man wouldn’t tell the difference from a quick glance. I did purchase an extremely cheap $50 USD round moissy sterling silver travel ring from Etsy that looks good enough for a travel ring (and STILL SPARKLIER than the crushed ice and doesn’t throw crazy rainbows).

My diamond ring is somewhere in the house… I haven’t seen it in person yet but I’m so excited!! When my SO pops the question I will certainly post it ๐Ÿ™‚

Goirishgrl :  No it’s very subtle flashes of color, I have two emerald cut moissanite rings also…one with windmills and one without…the one without flashes a ton more than the other. I have a brilliant cushion cut and it’s disco ball flashy but the step cuts aren’t anything like that.

kevinsbee :  it’s certainly beautiful!  I love step cuts, but for my ering I really wanted a sparkly diamond so ended up with my princess.  I’ve toyed with the idea of a moissanite emerald or asscher RHR and your ring makes me think I should go for it.

Hope its OK to add mine?!

Overall I like my diamond better. I hated when the moissy looked like plastic, which happened on occasion and once I saw it I couldn’t “unsee” it. I wore them both together for a week and truly didnt see much difference overall from a visual perspective. The thing most different is that my moissy was an an antique cushion and my diamond is an old mine. My diamond is just as sparkley rainbow as my moissy. It was more a mental difference for me.

The moissy was beautiful but I also knew it wasnt a diamond and it bothered me. Contrary to what some people would say, no one ever questioned it, we’re both over 40 and clearly can afford a diamond, so no one thought it was anything other than a diamond, But *I* knew it wasnt and that really bothered me.

Here’s bright sun

I labeled the above, I am sure you can tell which is which since the cut is different

Thanks for this post. I find these so helpful. I was dead set on moissanite until I saw one in person. The blue flashes just didnt do it for. They were beautiful and soooo sparkley but for me they just couldnt compete with diamonds. We ended up going the lab diamond route so glad we did.
