I have been off the boards for a while. Mostly due to the fact that my mom’s been in the hospital for about 1.5 weeks now and even before that she wasn’t feeling at her best.
Normally I would not turn to a forum with such morbid topic, but I really want some advice. Google hasn’t helped at all. Neither have about 22 doctors!
Anyone can relate to the following issues from their own family members or someone they know? I want to give the doctors some sugestions on what they can test for to narrow things down for them.
And for the medical bees, what are my mom’s options in this case? Is she ‘normal’ or not to be cared at home? She is craving home food as welll which i can cook for her and bring to the hospital but it doesn’t taste the same and she won’t eat it. She IS eating hospital food though.
Mom had an accident 1 month ago. VERY small accident. She was backing out of the driveway and someone hit on the passenger side. Nothing happened to mom. She was fine and went to work as usual. Her work involves a lot of heavy duty lifting unfortunately.
3 days after that her back began to ache and get stiff. (We’ve also had some extremely chilly weather.) She continued going to work.
4 days after that she developed a fever and chills. She STILL continued going to work for about 2 days until my bro pretty much forced her to take a day off. (I don’t live with her now since I got married.) He took her to her family doctor who prescrbed some strong fever reducer/pain killer (Tylenol) and sent her on her merry way. She kept getting worse to the point that after 2 more days she was literally immobile and in a state of confusion! (Couldn’t do basic math.)
We called for an ambulance and they took her in. She had a fever of close to 104 (40+ C) with chills for the next 4 days. She was on strong antibiotics for this period and generic saline IV. Her chills completely stopped on the 5th day. Her fever became interittent for 1 day and only going up to 100 (38 C) degrees. Then it stopped completely for the next 3 days. Then came back on the 4th day but still around 100. She has been off the antibiotics and IV for 3 days now since the chills stopped. (She was on them a total of 1 week).
Docs cannot find the issue at all. They know of this mini accident she had. They have done the following and all results so far have been negative. (I.e. nothing was found.):
– CT Scan of her brain
– CT scan of her neck down to her hips
– Spinal fluid test
– Urine test
– Multiple blood tests (for infectious diseases)
– Bone marrow biopsy (<– yes, it’s painful)
They say her blood count is really low. But it fluctuates. Sometimes it’s normal, sometimes not. She IS on blood thinners and NO other medication. Could blood thinners have an affect on count? They take her blood everyday 2 or more times. Her blood count (platelets) is between 74,000 – 110,000 usually. I am told that ‘normal’ is at least 120,000 for women. No iron or folic deficiency. She has low potassium too when she went in but it’s been brought up now with that weird’Tang’ like drink they gave her for a week.
She of course feels and looks a lot better than when she went in wiith the fever. She walks a lot and eats well now. But everyone except the Hematologist won’t let her go home until they find the cause. They have been working around the clock but do not have any answers at all.
She is now getting REALLY depressed at the hospital which is not helping her cause at all. She wants them to find the problem, but at the same time, NOT knowing how long it will take, she feels very discouraged. There is no light at the end of her tunnel so to speak. She has no idea when all this will end. She had a private room which we visited everyday and stayed over in as well. However now she’s sharing because the hospital fell short on private rooms even though I am paying. (Yay, Canada…)
I just feel so helpless. I do thank the nursing staff and doctors for their due diligence. But we are just not gettng any answers at all.
