A few bees have had their mom/family members make their dress! My mom and dad made my moms wedding dress, which I’m going to wear! I think the idea sounds great! You’re going to have a one of a kind dress!

For your second question, have you asked her to make your wedding dress? Or have you talked to her about it yet? And one more question, how elaborate do you want the dress, I think that will help with how hard the dress will be to make. I’m actually going to make my own reception dress!

By the way I would love to see what your prom dress looked like! I’ve never heard of a hand made one!

I DO think it’s possible – but if you have ANY concerns (which it sounds like you do – the lack of bridal experience would be my biggest if I were you), I would say start early. Have her do extra seam allowances and wait on alterations if you’re afraid of gaining/trying to lose weight, but start early. That way you have time for both trial and error (and correction) or to buy a dress if it doesn’t work out.

i think it sounds awesome, for the reasons you just mentioned.  how special that would be!

at a recent WB meetup, i met a woman who had made her sister’s dress.  she showed us a pic and it was GORGEOUS!  i know she’s on the board but i can’t remember her name… i want to say it was “miss nc” but i could be wrong.

good luck!

hmmm no picture..

Definitely find patterns that you like! That’s what my parents did/i’m going to do. Go to fabric/crafts stores, they’ll have tons!

The picture didn’t show up, but I’d love to see it too!  I considered making my own dress – but ended up hiring an indie designer who is working on mine.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with having your mom make your dress.  As long as you start early, and give yourself enough design and revisions time, you shouldn’t have any problems.  It is definitely not cheap or tacky – it is sweet and sentimental.  And, the biggest pro is that you can have EXACTLY what you want! Go for it!

aww your prom dress is cute! I’m sure your mom will do great on your wedding dress! Especially if you can find the right patterns that you want!
