I dont think anyone has said this but you could always make it into another piece of jewelry for her as a gift since it isnt her current ring so that she could still be using it. you could make a pretty pendant and that could be passed down later if she wishes (thats what my mom did with my grandmother ring after she passed away and it was just lovely)

I bet you probably don’t even have to bring it up to her. Chances are, when your boyfriend proposes to you with the ring that you picked out that he bought for you, she’ll think it’s perfectly you and that it’s beautiful and she’ll understand that you’re your own person. She probably won’t even think too much about the her ring anymore…until your sister starts getting closer to your age and dating a nice guy. Just a thought.

I would tell her the truth.  My parents have a terrible marriage (my father is emotionally and verbally abusive), and if they offered me a ring, I would refuse it.
