I tried on dresses a week ago, and prior to my mother told me I pretty much can’t wear anything but an a-line (very short & short waisted). She told me the mermaid style I was eyeballing wont sit rigt on my body.
Well last week I went dress shopping tried on my mermaid style and FREAKIN LOVED IT! When I showed pictures to my mom she didn’t gush like I expected her to. 🙁 All she could muster up was “very pretty”.
So, I guess I’d like some brutaly honest opinions- is this dress style suited for my body? What gives?!

You have the perfect body for a mermaid dress!! Your mom may just not like the style, but this is YOUR day! You look great.

No offence to your Mother but she must be crazy. You have a gorgeous figure, perfect for a mermaid dress.

It looks gorgeous on you!
Sometimes mermaids can be problematic on shorter brides because they cut the body in two. This one flows nicely and flares out gradually, so it looks more like a continuous line, which is what you want. It’s the poofier mermaids you want to avoid.
Also any vertical or digonal details will make you look taller – and you’ve got those in the skirt, the ruching and the neckline. Straps would also probably help, if they go straight up and aren’t too bulky.
As for whether it suits you – hell yes! Really shows off your hourglass figure, which would be hidden in an a-line gown.
I just think your mother has built up certain expectations of what she wants you to look like. That’s tough for her, but it’s not her choice. I think she’ll change her mind when she sees you all fitted and perfect on your big day.

That looks awesome on you! I keep reading on wedding advice websites that girls with hips shouldn’t wear mermaids, but I think they look great with some curves.

ETA: Look at your face!! You look so happy!! That look says it all 🙂

I expect that, to your mother, the mermaid shape doesn’t fit her idea of a wedding dress. It looks lovely on you.

It looks amazing on you. It doesn’t look disproportionate at all. I have seen some dresses that made the girls wearing them look like they might be kneeling. This does NOT have that effect.

@MrsPirt_2013: OMG I freakin love it too, if that dress doesn’t look perfect on you, I don’t know what will. You look amazing! Love the rouching and the detail, who’s the designer?

@MrsPirt_2013: You look amazing in the dress and you have an amazing body, so if that is what you want, you need to go for it. It is your wedding, your mum needs to understand that.
The only thing I would suggest is to try it on again, fold the hem up to where it will be on you, because in the current photo, the hem is over-hanging the dias you are standing on which will give you a longer line for the bottom half of the skirt. If you like it then, get it and rock the dress.
