Hoooold up. Do not let her make you wait until 2 months out! You’ll want at least 9-10 to have time for the dress to come in and get alterations. Maybe she’s not aware of how long these things take!

Do you know what dress shops you want to go to? The dress shops here all have websites and most of them say something along the lines of “All of out designer gowns are made to order, please allow 9-12 months for completion” or something similar. If you can find a site that says something like this, maybe you can show her to let her know times have changed? I know most people of our parents’ generation bought their dress off the rack, so of course it only took as long as alterations took, but if you’re wanting to buy a designer dress from a shop, it will take quite a long time to get it wedding-day ready. You could still probably wait a few months until you actually go, but I’d say right around the 1 year out mark you could at least start shopping around. Good luck!

While I definitely don’t think you should wait until 2 months out, I also think its too early to start shopping now. 15 months is a long time – designers new lines will come out and you will have a lot of time for dress regret. Personally, I think you should wait until under a year to start actually shopping. It doesn’t hurt to look around now, but I wouldn’t give anything too much serious thought just yet.

@SouthernGirl: You can’t wait two months before your wedding to get a dress.  It takes at least 6 – 9 months for a dress to get in.  I ordered my dress the second weekend in June and it arrived at the end of September.  I had my first fitting in the middle of October and my dress was ready the day after Thanksgiving, which was a wk before my Dec 1st wedding.  All in all the process does take about 6 months.  Start now, if she still won’t listen, take her to a bridal show and have her ask the experts.

@SouthernGirl:  I bought mine 11 months out and thought the timing was perfect.  I’d wait a few months if I were you, 11-12 months still gives you plenty of time look around without having to rush.

Even if she thinks it’s ridiculous, just tell her “well, that’s the way it is”. I would at least start looking now. I started 11 months out and wish I had started earlier

@SouthernGirl:  I would just explain that, while she may think it’s ridiculous that dresses take that long (I agree, it does seem ridiculous), they do take that long and there’s nothing you can do about it, no matter how ridiculous it is. I would wait a few months and ask again when you’re 11-12 months out or so. It may just come down to you having to put your foot down and make an appointment.

The times between her wedding and yours are really different now. There are a LOT of things you need to do earlier than you used to back in her day and a lot of parents don’t undertsand that. I’d wait a couple months and see if she feels better about the situation closer to 12 months but I wouldn’t wait to much longer than that. Start saving money yourself too just in case she really does hold out on you.
