@Anxiouspeanut:  Are you sure he’s not just messing with you?  I know my husband did that a lot right before he bought my ring.  He was buying a new truck, a new four-wheeler, a new gas-grill, etc.  He never bought any of it.  He just did it to wind me up…and to throw me off and make me think the engagement was far off.

Now that we are married, we are shopping for all of the above — together!

SO bought a car a couple months ago and at first I was hoping for a ring before that and felt the same way you do. But then I realized he pretty much drove around all winter without any heat in his car and the car has so many problems that I was getting a little worried that it would break down on him on the hwy and he’d get hurt. A couple of my girlfriends and my mom told me he should have bought a ring first – but to me getting him a safe car is more of a priority than me getting a ring.

Is your SOs current car really old or about to break down? If not then I think he is just trying to trick you.

My Fiance talked about all kinds of things he wanted to spend money on – fixing the driveway, a motorocycle, a new truck, you name it.  I always thought in my mind that I’d be so pissed if he bought a motorcycle in the middle of talking about getting engaged, but you know – all things being equal, it’s his money to spend as he chooses at this point.  If he wants to buy something big, thats his prerogative unfortunately.

That being said, I’d be willing to be he’s just messing with you 🙂

Does he need a new car?  If there is something wrong with his current car, I think that trumps engagement ring to be honest.  If your finances aren’t combined, have you offered to help pay for the ring?

@Anxiouspeanut: Could it be that he already has ‘ring fund’ saved up already? Now he’s saving for ‘car fund’?

Does he need a new car? If he needs a new car to get to work/get around/whatever? If he needs one, then it makes sense the money is used for that first.

Oops sorry… see you already answered that.

Tell him you’ll happily contribute to his car fund – AFTER you are engaged (a la the male engagement equivalent of something like a watch).

Oh I think they may be right about tricking you – it’s just better to call his bluff than blow your top 🙂
