I’ve been posting a bit lately about how I feel that I am actually moving SO closer to marriage, and now we have all sorts of unexpected costs. Great.
We both make pretty good money, and are financially secure and debt free. I am very paranoid about keeping us this way. And this month we’ve had about $10,000 dollars of unexpected costs come up. Yes, that’s right. Infact, that may be an underestimation – it could be closer to $15K +. (It’s mostly family stuff for him.)
So, now he’s actually more he’s actually interested in taking me through jewelry stores, talking about marriage, weddings, engagement rings etc, and now we can’t afford it. We may not even be able to afford the trip he was planning for our 5 year anniversary this fall.
I am super bummed out. It’s not like I necessarily thought a ring was coming for me super soon, but this just feels like a huge set back. It’s going to kill our savings dead. By early next year we should be able to start saving again (we share all finances) but then we’ll need to replenish our rainy day fund, then think about an e-ring, then think about saving for a wedding.
So before I was thinking ering within 1 year, wedding within two… it may just have got pushed back a while.
Sad day. We’ve already felt $5K of the costs, and will be feeling the rest shorly. There is still a chance that those costs could decrease, which would really really help, but I doubt it will happen.
How did you guys deal with your setbacks? Just wait longer? Choose a cheap ring and small wedding? I can’t do a small/cheap wedding (big, very close family). And I want a beautiful engagement ring – doesn’t have to cost months of salary or anything like that, but I really don’t want to give that up. My mother just has a band with small diamonds and she has always wished she had something special.
He’s 29 (almost 30), I’m 21 (nearly 22) and we’ve been together coming up on 5 years – over 3 living together.
