We spent zero dollars since our wedding was cohosted by our parents. Had we not been so fortunate, we would have spent close to the same amount.

My bias is that most young couples just starting out should probably not be spending large sums of money on a wedding.

How much did you spend on your wedding and what was/ is your budget?

Budget started at 15k, ended up closer to 20-22k

How did you finance?

My parents contributed the bulk by paying for our venue which included all the food and drink, my husband’s parents contributed about 5k which we used for the photographer/music/flowers, my husband and I covered about 5k ourselves for clothing/officiant/gifts and whatever else was left.

Where did you splurge and where did you save?

We splurged on the venue/food. Open bar, plated meals, champagne toast. We saved on the photographer/DJ (hired cheapish), my dress wasn’t overly expensive, small bridal party, strategic decor, and a lot finding/buying bits and bobs second hand

Lastly, where are you located?

Toronto, Canada

How much did you spend on your wedding and what was/ is your budget?

Budget is $30k, not including honeymoon, my dress, or my rings.

How did you finance?

My parents gifted us $30k, his parents have been helping pay for some of the “smaller” things, like rehearsal dinner, ceremony space, etc. He and I have both been saving ~250/mo for our honeymoon, and I’ve been putting aside any extra I have each month for if we go crazy with our splurging.

Where did you splurge and where did you save?

Splurged on photography/videography. We didn’t even budget for a videographer, and then hired one for $3.5k….whoops. So we’ve had to make up the difference elsewhere. We got a great deal on an all-inclusive venue, and includes a cake so we saved most of our money there.

Lastly, where are you located?

Pennsylvania

weddingmaven :  You didn’t spend “zero dollars”, you just spent other peoples’ dollars… Most of the PPs here have mentioned what their families contributed to the wedding. I think it would be more helpful to the topic at hand to actually break down the budget you had.

elopenotanoption :  We didn’t have a budget in mind necessarily, just paid for the important things first, and then added in the “extra” things later/ nearer the time.

Spent around £40k for 120 guests, excluding rings and honeymoon. I haven’t added up everything though as I don’t want to know the true cost!

We had around £15k in very generous contributions from parents. The rest was all saved for by us during our engagement year. No credit cards or loans. Therefore we took our honeymoon 6 months later when we could “justify” more splurging!

Saved on my dress as it was my dream dress and discontinued so I got an amazing deal on it. Splurged on flowers, food, the Bridesmaid or Best Man dresses, fireworks, grooms outfit… TBF we splurged on a lot, but we own our house and have savings so thought what the hell!

We live in the UK

How much did you spend on your wedding and what was/ is your budget?

We just got married this past weekend, so I haven’t had a chance to really add everything up, but I expect we are somewhere between $17,000 and $22,000.  Our goal was to stay under $15,000 for all the major things like venue, flowers, photographer, catering, and then spend cash on all the little extra things.

How did you finance?

My mom contributed $15,000 cash to our budget and then we spent a good bit of our cash and ended up putting about $2,500 on a credit card.

Where did you splurge and we’re did you save?

We splurged on photography.  Our photographer cost more than our food and we got a crap ton of food, but he is amazing and I think will be beyond worth it.  Our venue was a decent splurge too, but we were planning our wedding from out-of-town, so we needed a venue that really included a lot in order to make our lives easier.  I was orginally planning on DIYing our centerpieces, but ended up going with a florist instead, so I guess that was a splurge too.

I saved on my accessories.  My necklace was $15.00, my shoes were $30.00 and I bought shoe clips to fancy them up, and my earrings were $11.

Lastly, where are you located?

We were married in Altoona, PA.

How much did you spend?

A little over 20k, including wedding rings, hotel, etc. Our original budget was 15k but we quickly realized we’d need to raise it. The biggest costs were venue (4500), food (around 4k), drink (about 1k — I spent 800 on alcohol/beverages and then hired a bartender to serve it), lighting (1k) and photography (4k). The rest was dress/suit/accessories, decor, guestbook & card box, etc.

How did you finance?

Our plan was to each pay half from our individual savings. We were lucky to both be in a position to be able to take 10k from our savings accounts without dipping into emergency funds. (And had we not been we likely would have scaled back.) My family ended up paying for the venue so our out of pocket costs were closer to 16k or 17k, but we were prepared to pay for it ourselves had they not offered. His family hosted the reharsal dinner.

Where did you splurge/save?

I think most of our costs were fairly moderate so no huge splurges, though we also didn’t look for the absolute lowest costs on anything.

Our biggest nonessential cost was photography, but photography was very important to me and 4k was on the lower end of the photographers I liked.

We saved by keeping our guest list small, which in turn kept food & drink costs lower, and by skipping the DJ, videography, and photobooth. A friend officiated so no officiant fee. We definitely splurged if you consider our cost per guest ratio, but most of those expenses would have been the same regardless of guest count (e.g. venue, photography, decor, attire, rings). We went for quality over quantity.

How much did you spend on your wedding and what was/ is your budget?

We ended up at about $85k all in including our wedding coordinator (but not including dress and rings), which was less than I thought it would be. It was where I was HOPING we’d end up but I thought we were for sure going to end up in the six figures, so I was pretty happy with the final number overall.

How did you finance?

My family paid for most of it but we paid for a few extra touches ourselves like the food truck at the end of the event.

Where did you splurge and we’re did you save?

We only had 113 guests (not small but if we had like over 200 people it would have driven the price way up because of the cost per head)

We got the Saturday night $52,000 food and beverage minimum (yes, you heard that right) waaaay down because I guess there is a lot of competition out here and they wanted our business so we were able to negotiate.

We had a lot of unique touches but tried to skip the small stuff that we thought no one would notice, like wedding favors and custom cocktail napkins. We didn’t do ceremony programs either. We just had a big acrylic sign at the entrance with the names of the wedding party, immediate family, and the officiants which worked well.

Splurged on a band instead of a DJ but it was reasonably priced by band standards ($5k). Had some ambient lighting and a white dance floor. Florist was by far the most expensive vendor ($12k), followed by our photographer ($8k). Officiants were also a little on the pricier side but everyone raved about them and how amazing the ceremony was.

Lastly, where are you located?

LA. Venue was in Beverly Hills. To be honest, my wedding was probably on the less expensive side compared to what some other people spend around here!

sboom :  My point is it was our parents’ budget, not ours. We didn’t spend other people’s money. They chose to host in our honor and were involved in every aspect of planning. Otherwise, we would have been just as happy and just as married to go to City Hall.

You’re right that I was making a different kind of point, but I don’t see how their budget is relevant. Weddings can cost any amount. People should worry less about what others do and host what they can really afford, not what the wedding industry or couples of diverse socioeconomic backgrounds and locations tells them is “normal.”

How much did you spend on your wedding and what was/ is your budget?
The wedding has yet to happen, but our budget is $20k. We’ve spent almost $14k so far, and still have to spend money on flowers, decor, invitations, hair, makeup, alterations, hair & makeup trials, rings, wedding party/parent gifts.

How did you finance?
We’re not actively saving specifically for the wedding. We don’t spend a lot of money anyway, so we’re taking it from our savings.

Where did you splurge and we’re did you save?
Splurge: Photographer, videographer, dress
Save: No save the dates, beer/wine only, me doing the flowers, nice but cheap invitations, honeymoon (half of our honeymoon comes from a vacation won on TPIR)

Lastly, where are you located?
Wedding will take place in Eastern PA
