How much did you spend on your wedding and what was/ is your budget?

When we first got engaged i wanted it to be under £8,000 but i soon realised for the type of day we wanted this was unrealistic. We re-adjusted and its about £13,000 but we still have 17 mnoths to go!

How did you finance?

We are saving every penny we can between the engagement and the big day, with an aim to not need any credit cards or loans. My mum paid for my dress (£700) and as yet there may be a donation from FH parents but it wont exceed £1,000.

Where did you splurge and we’re did you save?

We have splurgede on the venue & catering, which together is coming to about £7,750, but we are saving by cutting out things that arent inmportant to us, like favours and huge florals. Also my dress was a sample sale so i got 75% off, and we are DIYing most of the decor!

Lastly, where are you located?

UK

also, for what its worth i dont think its anyone place to judge how anyone spends their money. I think its niave to say a “young couple” ashould do more than spend it on one day. We have a house already, and work hard for our lives, so why dont we deserve to celebrate in the same way as “older” couples who may be more established? At least we arent putting on anyone, its not like we want a big day but were asking for someone else to pay for it.

People work hard for their money and they can spend it how they like.

youngbrokebride :  I think I’ve made my opinion on that to be pretty obvious from a financial POV. I happen to think it’s a mistake for most, not all, young couples to spend a whole lot of money at that stage of life. Personally, I hope to pay it forward, by being in a position to help my own kids out when or if the time comes.

Please don’t misunderstand. I certainly do not think that makes me any better or worse. It is of course the ultimate responsibility for an independent couple to fund their wedding. But, at the average price of a wedding today I simply don’t think it’s a wise use of funds in the vast majority of cases. I know that’s going to be a very unpopular perspective on a wedding forum.

How much did we spend and what was our budget?

Approximately $23,000 usd  and budget was around that.

How did we finance?

Our savings. We are already good savers so had enough in bank. Husband’s parents ended up paying for alcohol and my parents ended up giving us a sizable sum for our honeymoon.

What did you splurge on and what did you save?

We spent a lot of money on our venues. We wanted to get married in a particular cathedral and that wasn’t negotiable.  Also our reception venue was expensive. Amazing food though.  My dress was couture through a wedding designer and really pricey.

Savings- our friend who is a photographer did our photos. Our videographer was cheap and he is my one regret. Just useless!!

How much did we spend and what was our budget?

Budget was around 100k and I think we’ll net out to 80-85k when it’s all said and done. Not including honeymoon or rings

How did we finance?

Mostly my family but we are paying for a few extras like favors and a photo booth. Obviously we paid for our honeymoon and rings

What did you splurge on and what did you save?

The venue I still have sticker shock over but it is truly beautiful and right on the water. It’s about 50-60k (depending on how many guests RSVP) but it is all inclusive of food, liquor and they even provide a cake from an awesome bakery!

Savings- my dress was way under budget and the band is amazing and the best priced we found in the area.

Budget was £15k. We actually spent about £18k in the end. This does include the rings but not the honeymoon. We’re in the UK.

The cost was shared 3 ways between fi, me and my Mum who kindly offered to contribute.

We all had enough in savings for our portion before we got engaged.

We saved on: flowers (none at church), photographer (two friends did an amazing job), venue (went with a cheaper venue so we could invite more people), the car (I used my own), the cake (made by a family friend as our wedding gift), invitations (all electronic).

We splurged on: his suit (cost more than my dress!), the band (excellent 9-piece live band I particularly wanted), booze (Mum paid for an open bar).

We have paid for/budgeted for:

Wedding Bands: $1000

ERing: $800 (I will barely wear mine once I’m married)

Honeymoon: $1,000 for dinners and stuff. We will go to my parents’ summer house, our favorite place.

Haircuts, my hairstyle/spray tan, mani/pedi, and some odds and ends like makeup: $600

My parents have paid/budgeted for:

Restaurant: $3,000 (thirteen people total)

Wedding Dress: $250

My father is officiating and my mother will do my bouquet/decor: ????

So about $6,500 including rings and honeymoon, because I personally could never justify spending more on one day.

My wedding will be near my hometown in a central/northern NJ

How much did you spend on your wedding and what was/ is your budget?

 ~40k, budget was originally 30k

How did you finance?

I sold my condo which netted us plenty of money to put down on our new house, with around $10k or so left for the wedding (after furniture, nest egg, etc). My parents put down $20k and the rest my Fiance and I saved over 1.5 years

Where did you splurge and we’re did you save?

Our venue was a splurge but totally worth it. I would say I saved on smaller things like table numbers, favors, etc. We still had a fairly expensive photographer, DJ (professional family friend that threw in extras like uplighting for free), flowers (I found someone that worked out of her house so that was cheaper but still pricey) and desserts (better bang for your buck than cake but still pricey).

We saved by hosting beer and wine only (liquor was cash) and skipping the videographer.

Lastly, where are you located?

Wedding was in midcoast Maine

Budget under $2k, spent about $1200 We had 50 guests, wanted to keep it small.

Venue: Free church, we just cleaned up.

Officiant: Our pastor did it for free

Music: We plugged an iPhone into a speaker

Food: 200. With in-law’s help cooking, homemade, buffet style.

Dress $250

Groom tux 200

Photography: in-law took photos. I didnt want 1,000 pictures I’d never look at again, we just knew someone with a good camera and took a few shots as a couple and with the wedding party.

Flowers: $100. We kept flowers to a minimum, just the bride and bridesmaids. We also made the bouquets.

Decorations: $50, we borrowed some from an aunt who saved hers.

Cake and cupcakes: $100. Made the cupcakes ourselves. Mother-In-Law did my hair.

Invitations/ save the date cards about $100

Marriage license $100

Location: south eastern U.S. Bridesmaids and groomsmen paid for their clothes, but we selected items they could afford, bridesmaid dresses were under $80 each. As you can tell, we just wanted a small and simple celebration 😊

How much did you spend on your wedding and what was/ is your budget?

I think it will come in at £16,000

How did you finance?

My fiancé and I worked out a savings plan so we will each save £4,000 by the time we wanted to get married (PhD students so not a lot of money!) and we started planning an £8,000 wedding.

I was close to booking a pub, when my parents very generously offered to pay for a beautiful and much more expensive venue, which will be £7000

Certain family members have given us money to ‘upgrade’ from what my fiancé and I were planning to do: my Aunt gave me £1000 for a dress after I was buying second hand. Another Aunt is paying for the bells to be rung in our church. My fiancé’s parents are paying £1000 for the wine.

Where did you splurge and we’re did you save?

Splurged mostly on the venue and great food (thanks to my parents generosity). Might splurge on a band over a DJ if we can find the right band! I think the Church is quite expensive but it was very important to me.

Saved on the photographer (unpopular I know but we loved his photos and he was less than half the price!), not having wedding cars, got a good deal on my dress, cut guest list at 65

How much did you spend on your wedding and what was/ is your budget?

I wanted my budget to be $25,000, but we ended up spending more like $28 or $29K

How did you finance?

I had been saving for a while, but honeslty I barely touched my savings.  We had a long engagement so I had 2 years to spread out the cost which was nice.  My parents also helped out by paying for the food (which is a big expense) and my dress.  Fiance and his mom took care of a few things as well.  It ended up being myself paying for 1/3, my parents paid for 1/3 and Fiance and his mom paid for 1/3.

Where did you splurge and we’re did you save?

Splurged on photography and videography.  Those were really important to us.  Saved on decorations becuase the venue was gorgeous on it’s own so we only had to worry about tables.

How much did you spend on your wedding and what was/ is your budget?

I was hoping to keep it around $15k, but when we started looking and saw the guest list, we realized that was completely unreasonable for the amount of people we are inviting. So the budget is now $25k and we should land somewhere around there.

How did you finance?

My parents surprised us by offering to pay for most of it. So we took them up on that. We are paying for some of the stuff as well: invitations, live band, photographer, about half of the decorations, my fiance’s suit, etc.

Where did you splurge and we’re did you save?

We splurged on photography, the live band and the reception venue. We are saving on flowers (found an amazing florist out of our local farmer’s market who was half the price of others, and we are also doing greenery on the tables instead of centerpieces), food (local bbq joint that eveyone loves and my hometown bakery is giving us a deal as part of her wedding gift to us), the church, and table decorations (DIY) to name a few!

We spent $35k on the wedding, and another $12k on the honeymoon, so $47k total.  Our budget was $45k.

We were very fortunate, in that our parents (we have 3 sets, husband’s parents, and my mom/stepdad, and dad/stepmom) collectively paid for everything.  It was not asked for, but something that all 3 sets of parents individually offered up money.

We had a destination wedding in Puerto Vallarta for 65 guests.  The location itself was a splurge, and we also splurged on my dress and a custom suit for my husband, and the photographer.  We saved on invites, and cut back on some flowers.  Overall, it was exactly what we wanted!!

How much did you spend on your wedding and what was/ is your budget?

$20k

How did you finance?

Savings and a contribution from my parents

Where did you splurge and we’re did you save?

We spent the most money on our band – but it was important to me. To save, we chose a very economical venue which included linens, food, bar, lighting, etc. I also am a wedding professional so I got a lot of free help from people on photography, video, etc. which most people don’t get.

We splurged a little by getting a cake which I initially wasn’t going to get. I’m looking into flowers from Whole Foods; if they’re under $800 I will buy centerpieces, otherwise just going with candles. I can’t spend a huge bunch of cash on decor because I don’t think it’s that important. My mom and best friend paid for my dress. I bought my invites on a super sale from zazzle. I don’t have a wedding party to save money.

Does not include honeymoon; that will run about $3500.

Lastly, where are you located?

northern Virginia
