weddingmaven :  I think the issue here is that you’re weighing in with an opinion about a position you’ve never actually been in. You say you’d be perfectly happy going to city hall and not having a reception, but you never actually had to try it. You don’t know what it’s like to opt out of a wedding for financial reasons. You never actually had to consider whether it was worth the work to spend some time saving, working a second job, etc. so that one day you could show your kids pictures of your grandma dancing at your reception, so that you could have a picture of you in a white dress on your mantle, so that you could have all the people you love in one place for one night. It’s easy to dismiss the value of a wedding when it came easy to you. But to be so flippant about something that some people really value and work hard for, even if you don’t mean to, comes off as disrespectful.

This is gonna be interesting.

Rough initial budget: $10,000

Actual spend: $25,000 including our ceremony, reception, 3 week honeymoon, and both our wedding bands.

How did you finance? We didn’t finance or credit, we paid for everything in cash. We got back about half in cash gifts, putting it in our house fund.

Where did you splurge/save? Splurge on the ceremony, we stayed in a castle in Scotland for 3 days. My hair and makeup was $700 lol *shame*

Save: our reception, not intentionally! We had 50 people in a private room at a pub for a three-course meal and open bar, the bill at the end of the night was surprisingly low!

Where are you located? Canada

Micheruby :  As it happens, not true. We did not assume our parents would host and had already made the decision not to spend significant money on a wedding.

weddingmaven :  I agree with you, but we have the fullness of time by which to judge this. Young people do not. And society has gone crazy with the amount spent on weddings these days. Im convinced that when you tack the word “wedding” on anything the price goes up astrnomically.

I know that it’s hard to fathom, but for most people the wedding becomes less and less important as the years pass. I only remember flashes from my wedding and reception. I told my daughter this, to explain why we weren’t spending tons of money on a wedding and she agreed, and fortunately she didn’t want some big show anyway. I have no idea what her total wedding cost, I’m sure it was much more than we wanted to spend. I do know that the flowers and decorations were about $30,000 because I handled that. The groom’s parents paid for the rehearsal dinner which was very nice of them and was about $25,000. It was a beautiful wedding on the smaller side, only 120 people.

And guess what? She’s separated now. Money well spent? You decide.
