Call and set up an income based repayment plan. Sign up for auto-deductions; it gives you .5% break on the interest.
It can be done. I have a large amount in student loans and I am still able to live in the city without roomates and pay all my bills. Good luck!

Bartending on the weekends! Do it for a while – maybe a year? And build up a cushion so you can take the next year off. Hopefully by then, you’ll have gotten merit and cost of living increases to cover what you were making bartending.

@peachacid:  If it’s a choice of eating or working weekends….well, you know what you have to do ;-).

Is there anything you can sell to take your monthly costs down? Do you have a car payment? You could sell your car and get a less fancy or older model. Cancel cable? Get rid of your smart phone? Move to a smaller/cheaper place?

I know exactly how you feel and it’s beyond stressful! Check out this girl’s blog – it has so many amazing tips on how to save money and pay down debt faster:

http://andthenwesaved.com/

I haven’t taking on the full blown spending fast yet since it’s hard to spend no additional money while planning a wedding and being a bridesmaid 2x this year – but once our wedding is over I plan to really buckle down and get my loans paid off as fast as possible thanks to her blog. I’ve actually been able to significantly decrease my spending habits outside of loan payments and rent just after the motivation I got from reading her posts. Good luck!

@peachacid:  make use of WHATEVER skills you have. I taught piano for years to make ends meet. You’re a teacher so look for tutoring jobs (pro tip – skip your area and go to where the rich people live), teach ESL, offer to edit resumes… Once I was so broke I actually started selling off unnecessary furniture on CL. GOOD LUCK!!!
