So, after debating over the whole issue of paying for the cake tasting, I finally made the decision and have cancelled the tasting with the pricier of the two bakers. She wanted to charge $20 for a 6 inch tasting cake for each flavor over the first free one. That just seemed crazy to us.
Add to that the fact that she emailed me 4 times today, to change the time & location of the tasting, and then to tell me she needed to know NOW what we wanted to taste. REALLY??? The tasting date is a month away & we haven’t even really looked at the flavor list yet. So, I just told her “thanks, but this isn’t going to work.”
I feel kind of bad, because this lady has won a bunch of awards for her cakes, but I think that even beyond the cost thing, we’re likely to have a personality conflict.

Sounds like the right decision to me.

I think you did the right thing. I don’t know if she’s stressed and swamped after “winning her awards”. Or if she’s a snot or what. BU you can definitely have easier experiences with bakeries.

Wow, she sounds really crazy! Good thing you backed away from that when you did!

I think you made the right decision, $20 per flavor is pretty expensive. However since she has won alot of awards, its probably to make sure that people that are doing a tasting are serious about getting a cake from her, not just looking for free tastings all over 😉

I agree with naangel. She may be trying to protect herself from people who just want cake, but that’s really expensive and she sounds not so nice. I am a big fan of gut instincts when it comes to dealing with vendors.

Sounds like a good call cancelling. My cake tastings were all free. I didn’t even know some people charge you!

I myself, love a good cake. And there are so many good bakers. Gimme a publix cake and a spoon and I’m good to go.

@bellenga, you may know the answer to this….. Is there a Publix in or close to Dahlonega? I know you’re kind of familiar w/the area, and when I was there for a visit last time I didn’t see one. We’ll be there next month for a week & I’d like to check it out if there is one, and maybe keep them in mind as a standby for my cake if we don’t like the lady I have scheduled to tast with. I’ve heard so much about the Publix cakes, they may be worth me checking out!
