Most overrated tourist destinations?

uh…..as a person with a foreign credit card (from the USA) who is literally in Paris at the moment, the ticket machines for the trains into the city from the airport definitely DO accept foreign credit cards, so I don’t know who told you that.

It seems to me like a lot of people here are complaining about entire regions they visisted because they only went to the parts of those cities frequented entirely by tourists, which are always the absolute worst parts of any region

. Like….Bourbon st is AWFUL, but the rest of NOLA is wonderful. Times square is a hellhole that real NYers would visit only if you paid them hundreds of dollars—but the non-midtown parts of the city are wonderful (head to Brooklyn Heights, Ft. Green, the far West Village etc.). Paris is fantastic….if you stay the hell away from the Louvre/Eiffel Tower etc. (I find the comment on public toilets odd since Paris has way MORE public toilets than all major US cities combined–all major cities have this issue). Rome is fine…if you flee the fake parts of the city where nobody lives but tourist hotels and head to the residential areas. London is fantastic (if you avoid the Tower/picaddily circus nightmare).

If you want to tour places…take the time to wander the ACTUAL city, and not the parts invented for people who are stoppingy by for half a day. It’s inevitably 10,000 times better.

What I can’t understand is Disney. It’s ENTIRELY fake crap. Epcot is the most ridiculous–it’s like people invented mini versions of the world that were entirely racist so that they could avoid having to confront the reality of how other people ACTUALLY live, but still be like “Oh I know how Japan is!”

If I had to pick a real-world detination–Dubai. It’s also quite fake–everything is just chains of fancy places elsewhere, half-done with bad service because….it’s basically a slave state (so you also know you are participating in oppression which makes pretty much everything bad.)

yupmarried :  Taking these pictures and then posting them is in such poor taste that I can’t even begin to find the words to express it. Not cool.

I’ve visited all places mentioned in this thread other than london. CO is filled with chill friendly people, but it is saturated with pot smokers (Im not shaming. I’ve personally never whitnessed it anywhere as much and I come from a legal state). Last time I was there hiking the Garden of the gods I noticed a group of ppl smoking pot from a bubbler in the parking lot. Children and families there. I’ve also seen people smoking while driving. Cancun-gas station attendant swiped my credit card to pocket the money (I get text message alerts) and involved authorities. Paris-there are men whipping out their pee pees to pee in public. NOLA there is garbage EVERYWHERE. I mean everywhere. Beads smashed on the ground, plastic cups on the ground in million pieces. It broke my heart to meet an under age prostitute there high on meth, who hadn’t slept in days. Just a block from bourbon. Wearing mismatched shoes (i still wonder about her). Vegas stink like a sewer. Ppl trying to flaunt how much money they have and the under ground stuff going on is horrible. Waikiki is fun, but it doesn’t represent hawaiian beauty as much as it could. LA is a bit shady tbh. San fran tourist spots can be fun, but a bit overrated and the traffic in CA in the tourist spots 😩 The list goes on, but one thing to remember OP is you’ll find drugs, prostitution, garabage, etc in any major city you visit. Hell I visited seattle last month and spotted human droppings 6xs. Id still go nack because I enjoy walking the hills and the seafood. Don’t let it discourage you from wanting to explore and sight see new areas. Carry min cash/credit cards and keep them in your socks while walking. Have a buddy system. Don’t drink off ppl/let strangers buy you drinks, etc etc be safe and have fun. P.s everyone can tell you their experience (s) but only you can decide  what is “too touristy” for you personally.

DeniseSecunda :  yeah this really struck me too. Who’s first instinct when seeing a person on the ground in medical distress is to take a picture and post it on the internet.

notmeeither :  another vote for Paris. Maybe it’s because I live in London, but to me it’s just another grey, overly touristy city where you have to spend half a day in queues and €€€ for mediocre food. Doesn’t help that French food is literally my idea of hell 😂

US: Bourbon Street in New Orleans (so gross)

Outside US: Athens, Greece (once you spend less than a day at the historical sites the rest of Athens is generally awful, skip it and hit the Islands)

I feel like the only place I’ve been that had super touristy areas that weren’t overrated, honestly, was in Japan. I loved every second of it.

I think the most disappointingly overrated place was New Orleans. There is so much culture, and areas of it were cool- like the garden district, but in general, I wasn’t that impressed. Also, everyone says how good the food is, and I’m not saying the places we went did a bad job, but it’s just not my favorite style of food. I could never have gumbo or jambalaya again and be perfectly happy.

Isabelle663 :  100% agree, Japan is my absolute favourite. I’ve been twice now and seen 5 different cities and they were all great.

In the US – Myrtle Beach.  I cringe so hard when people throw it out as a honeymoon location.

I also am underwhelmed by Disney.

Any area of New York State south of Poughkeepsie. It’s fun once, to see the Statue of Liberty and Times Square….for 5 seconds. Ugh. NYC is no fun.

But I’m an Upstater and we hate Downstate so I’m biased lolol

Waikiki- why go to a beautful island to waste time in an overcrowded city? Soo glad we spent our honeymoon in the peaceful North Shore instead 🙂

Los Angeles- I live here, so I’m biased, but I don’t really get the appeal for tourists. Most touristy places here are dirty, crowded, and not that exciting. I feel bad for the poor souls along Hollywood Blvd whenever I drive by, haha.

I will also say that I found Paris to be a little bit disappointing. I still had a great time there, it just wasn’t as “magical” as people make it out to be.

rosebailey :  I am goin to Italy for my honeymoon including Venice, Florence and Rome but only two nights in Venice. I get the sense that two nights (which turns out to be not quite two full days) will be plenty. We’re also goin to the Amalfi Coast. I’m guessing it’s not overrated!

valintine :  lol I love Vegas too!  But I’m from SoCal so it was never a big deal for me to go there…quick drive for a weekend trip. But two to three days is my limit. Three might even be too much.
