My boyfriend and I are shopping around for rings. I am pretty set on the Diamond Solitare look and the enternety band set together. However, because my fingers are a little thicker than normal due to 30lb weight gain, smaller diamonds looked very unproportionate to my finger size.
I tried on a 1.75 at tiffany’s when we were at the mall and that size diamond looked proportionate.
However, there is no way we want to spend that much for a ring. I certainly want a super, sparkley, eye clean diamond, but paying that much is crazy for us. We have other things we need to allocate that money towards.
So, we were considering trying out online retailers but we live in Canada and with the U.S. Dollar amount, we may not get such a great deal after all. But going to a bricks and mortar store may brings us WAY out of price range. For instance, the ring I tried on at Tiffany’s was $36,000! And honestly, I wasn’t really loving it. It looked okay, but nothing that great. I love simple and classic with lots of sparkle but there was something about it, that just didn’t look right on me.
I digress, so, essentially we are looking to see if there is anyone out there that has any experience with online retailers, to help keep costs down significantly?

I am Canadian, too. The dollar does suck at the moment and having recently bought a new ring myself from the U.S., ouch. That being said, I bought online, and always buy online for any of my rings. I highly recommend it over in store, even with the current exchange. You can get a much bigger bang for your buck – and often a much better stone than in most stores – ESPECIALLY if you educate yourselves or go about it the right way. I highly, highly recommend going to Pricescope, giving them your budget on USD for a stone and setting, and letting them find you a spectacular ring for whatever your budget is if you don’t want to put in all the legwork. They will also help you pick what are the best things to compromise on (eg. colour and clarity, latter you just eye clean) to get more size if that is important to you.
They can also help you find good Tiffany style settings. If you like the 6-prong Tiffany for example, the Vatche U113 is a great “almost like it”, and Whiteflash is one of the online vendors that sells great diamonds AND Vatche settings.

RayKay: +1 to checking out pricescope and also checking out whiteflasH. Though we didn’t end up going with them, my OH and I talked to Becca and she was incredibly helpful 🙂

My Fiance got my ring from Good Old Gold. They are a B&M store and an online store. Fiance and I learned about them from Pricescope. They were a pleasure to work with and were able to track down exactly what I was looking for. Good luck!

springflowersringtime: James Allen….I really cannot say enough good things about them, the prices are amazing and love all the pictures they have of each diamond. Customer service was amazing too!

springflowersringtime: With Tiffany’s you are paying for the name on top of the jewelry, so I’d stay away from them. My Fiance got my solitare at here. He said he got a really good price for the diamond and the setting (he did a custom setting).

springflowersringtime: Yeah, def. don’t drop the money on Tiffany uless you are head over heels in love with the setting. You can get amazing stones online. Brian Gavin Diamonds does beautiful solitaires and their stones look to die for.

Sorry for the long answer!! pricescope was really helpful when we were looking for rings. we originally wanted to buy online (whiteflash, GOG, Brian Gavin) but my fiancé wanted to look in person first. so we went to ID jewelry (they were highly recommended on pricescope and are located in NYC. which is where we live) and I am so glad that we did!! They are AMAZING!!! they have a reputation for working within any budget and they actually found something bigger than I wanted for $1000 less than my budget!!!! (GIA xxx hearts and arrows that falls within super strict cut parameters) They also price match (or lower) and have access to the same “virtual stones” that are listed on most online vendors. If your interested in upgrades they have a lifetime upgrade policy (whatever you paid for stone you can use towards ring some places don’t give you back full value). And they have a reputation for making eternity rings for fair prices (search on pricescope tons of people have them made from ID) they also have tons and tons of settings for fair prices. If you contact them mention you are looking for pricescope quality rings (they will make sure you get the best performing stone since they know the hardcore and very strict standards pricescope users look for) I’m not sure about ordering fron Canada but it’s worth reaching out! Ask for Yekutiel!!!

We bought my diamond from Zoara. They were the most affordable of all the online jewelwers that we found.

Both of my rings are from Blue Nile….they are awesome.

Both my rings and FI’s are from Blue Nile. Excellent service and sold for a fraction of the price of poorer quality stones on the high street.

Are you set on a diamond? I’m guessing you are, but if size is what you are really going for consider getting a moissanite, amora gem, or white sapphire. You will save soooo much money.
Consider etsy! They have great prices.

springflowersringtime: I love love love my Blue Nile ring. They are one of the most trusted online diamond retailers and have a great following. We had a wonderful experience – we got scared for a second because we went back and forth for hours looking for the specs we wanted for a good price and they called and said the diamond we selected was not up to standards and had a small inclusion.
We would have to wait another week or 2 for another one to come in that matched the same specs and they actually upgraded us a little for the same price 🙂 I have several jeweler friends and each has complimented my ring and praised the price that i got it for.

Costco.com! Seriously. Their diamonds are excellent quality.

Blue Nile is amazing, my diamond from there is appraised for almost double of what Fiance paid! What a steal! He had a great experience with them and I recommend them to everyone.
