A friend of mine was divorced from his wife 13 years ago, and he pretty much skay-rood his ex in the papers. His mother, who was the supreme court justice at the time signed the papers and legalized the divorce. Is this legal?? They live on a Navajo indian Reservation-don’t know if that changes anything. Basically, is this a legal divorce, or are they unknowingly still married?

I don’t know the answer to that, but that is really strange. I would imagine that them being under Navajo law makes it unique. I think it is legal so long as someone doesn’t object to it. Like if someone was contesting the divorce, they could say it wasn’t proper for the mother to make it legal, and it would have to see a different judge. I am just guessing though.

I guess it’s legal if the ex never contested it successfully, but it’s certainly not ethical. It definitely sounds like she should have recused herself.
