I’ve always subscribed to the idea that the mother of the bride should not wear the same color dress as the bridesmaids. How do you bees feel about this?
It seems like everything we’ve found so far that we like, that fits and is flattering… is the same coral shade, or very close, to the color the bridesmaids dresses are.
Is it bad form for the mother to wear the same color?

At my best friends wedding both the mother of the bride and mother of the groom had dresses in the same color as the bridesmaids. It looked very nice. They were both similar styles but different enough too. The only thing that was odd to me was her aunt insisting on knowing the color so she could also “get a gown made to match”…that was a little awkward.
My mother already bought a dress in the same color pallet for my wedding too. I think it’s nice.
However, I have seen it go the other way too. At a wedding I attended last summer the mothers were instructed to wear black cocktail dresses. One was a little worried about that, she didn’t want to seem like she was in mourning over the wedding or anything, but it looked very classy.
I think you’ll be fine either way.

I guess I never really thought of it before you mentioned this. My mom is looking at a brown dress and my girls are wearing brown too. I guess I will have to see how it all works out. Interested to hear other Bees responses. Looking back I can remember going to weddings where they were different and the same color. Never looked odd either way to me anyways.

My mom is wearing a dress nearly the same color, but a totally different style. His mom is wearing a dress that matches another color in the theme. I told them they could wear whatever they want.

We wanted to stay away from my mom and my Mother-In-Law wearing the same color family as the bridesmaids. My mom especially felt that they’d look too much like an “orchestra”. My Mother-In-Law and mom also coordinated to not get the same color. I think it’s nice that everyone in different roles in the wedding will stand out on their own.

Has your mother been looking at dresses? There are lots of posts about what the mothers should wear and you get a lot of the “Let her wear what she wants”, which I agree with. She shouldn’t pick her dress based on the criteria that she should match or should not match the BMs dresses. Maybe you could help her with selecting something you think would be lovely and in a color that suits her.

I don’t want to dictate what she wears. Everything we’ve seen so far that she likes has been in the same coral family as the bridesmaids dresses, which is why I asked for opinions.
I just don’t want everyone marching in looking like we’re all wearing a uniform. LOL

@dittobelle: I agree that one shouldn’t necessarily dictate what the MOB chooses to wear. As long as her color complements the rest of the bridal party, I think she should be able to choose what she’d like to wear! 🙂 Moms seem to have a difficult enough time shopping already, I’d hate to give them even more restraining rules!

I think it is perfectly fine but I do think it looks nicer in photos if she is contrasting
