@Peanut-Sue:  OMG my mom is wearing a similar dress! The black and white seperates look. She looks so super great in it, I’m so glad she didn’t pick something frumpy.

OP, try boutiques for evening gowns and just steer clear of “mother of the bride” sections or designations. Your mother should just look for a gown she likes.

It really is tricky. My mother wants to wear a short dress, and it’s hard to find one that looks special enough for her to be more than just another guest but not horribly frumpy/matronly. We’re certainly not limiting ourselves to MOB lines but we have a much more limited selection in Canada, especially in my home town! It’s hard to even find inspiration pictures. My mother is going to Italy in the spring and hoping maybe she’ll find something there. I hope you have some luck finding something.

My mom had the same exact problem and we seriously went to 6 bridal stores, Kohls, Dillards, Macys, Jcpenney and freaking Sears before she realized she could just wear a bridesmaid dress. It look amazing on her, worked perfectly with my wedding and she felt great! so maybe take a look at longer Bridesmaid or Best Man dresses and maybe she will find something better suited to her!

Here is a picture of my mom dress with my dress and my sisters, who were BM’s.

@MrsWBS:  In general, you are right.  But some of the higher end bridal manufacturers also make amazing gowns.

I’m having the opposite problem. My mother is in her late 60s and every MOB dress is made for a much younger woman. Not sure where you are looking, I need something longer with sleeves or a jacket and everything I see is what you described you’re looking for.

My mom had her dress custom made, because she literally could not find ANYTHING in stores or online.  She said everything out there was insanely ugly….

I just just happened to walk past this at a mall store geared toward younger gals. I’m short, so there won’t really be a gap between the lining and the overlay hem.  the underlay looks black in this pic from Modcloth (Maximum Allure dress) but it’s actually a lovely brown with cream lace overlay. It’s not extremely dressy, but still says “I’m dressed up”. I plan to bling it up with a belt from anthropologie.
