Hello all! I have a major problem and I need help! My mom is a little bit older than most mothers of girls my age, and so it is expected that we would have very different fashion ideas. We went shopping last week for her wedding outfit and what she picked out I hate! She picked out a black pencil skirt with a 3/4 sleeve black top that has sparkles and sequins all over it! She thinks it looks chic…and to make matters worse my maid of honor went along with it so my mom thinks she is all cool now. Unfortunatly, I feel like black at my wedding it bad enough, not to mention the sparkles! I tried finding things she might like instead…and I even found a ADORABLE bandana dress that was red and black (my wedding colors are red and ivory, and there wasn’t too much black in the dress…) that was very age appropriate, but she didn’t budge! How can I express my feelings on the outift without hurting her feelings?? I need to act fast before she buys the outfit!

Tell her she can’t wear anything sparkly because it wont photograph well 🙂 Maybe you could even ask your photographer what tips he has for outfits that photograph well. Mine said no sparkes, sequins, or pastels. Richer colors look better. (Although sparkles and sequins are ok for the bride:)

Hmmm, this is a tough one! I do like the idea that jacqi came up with. But, being that its your Mother, I’m not really sure there is anything you can do to actually stop her from buying what she wants! I know I can’t say anything to my Mom. I mean I can, but it won’t matter too much lol. I’d tell her how I felt, and see what happens. At the end of the day, those minor details don’t matter to me. So if she chooses that dress, try to go with the flow! 🙂

That doesn’t sound so bad, actually! My mom picked out a turquoise suit with a patterned top in white, coral and blue. I felt like throwing up (it was that nauseating) and I was like, WTF? But I did what Jacqi suggested and told her it wouldn’t photograph well, that patterns never do and as it is a night wedding, she should look a little more formal. She promptly bought a black dress. I wish you luck with this!

Oh that doesn’t sound so bad. My friend’s mom wore a long black dress where the top of it was a t-shirt shape (sleeves and all) and it was completely covered in sequins.
A little matronly maybe, but keep in mind that the older ladies equate sequins to stuff being classy. My mom has a few sequined jackets she’s always trying to wear for nice nights out to dress up her outfits. Big shoulder pads and all
