I saw this article and wanted to see what the bees thought of it. The second link is the actual essay that caused all kinds of drama. Personally, I felt as though the essay was a bit extreme. Any thoughts bees?

Just wanted to say, I do not think motherhood is a prision, That was just the title of the article. I definitely want to have kids some day :-).
Also, I felt the essay writer was a bit extreme for calling Angelina Jolie and Madonna
narcissists. I think it is wonderful they adopted those children.

There was a lot of talk about Erica Jong’s piece (and her daughter’s companion piece) on some of the other blogs I read.
I think she was extreme in her views and while she’s entitled to express herself, it’s just not helpful! Women would be better off supporting each other instead of tearing each other down and judging each other.

@ladyox: I agree, I think women need to support each other, regardless of our differences. I liked the moms today article because I think that is what the author was trying to say. I don’t think there is one “official” perfect way to parent. The only time I really take issue with a parenting style is if it involves any child abuse. I am strongly against this, as I am sure we all are. I have seen what that can do to a child…..it is very sad :-(. Other than that, everyone should raise their child as they see fit.

I don’t yet have children but I do think that we have over complicated motherhood and parenting.
Everyday we are bombarded by new messages and advice on what / how / why we should be parenting our children when the reality is that we can only do the best we can for them and hope they turn out to be productive adults!
In my opinion we make it so much harder for ourselves than it should / needs to be – only we can make the decisions regarding our families and children because we are the only people that walk in our shoes.
