I almost bought a motion detection one, but at the last second I decided to try the regular (and much cheaper) spray that you douse the carpets and furniture with.  It helped calm my cat down a lot!  He was having trouble adjusting to my SO’s apartment (crying at night, scratching at the door, etc.), but after using this for a few days he was so much better.  The stuff I bought was good for 10-12 hours, so we would spray it an hour before bed and when we got up in the morning.  I also created a catly nest for my kitty so he could have his own safe spot, and he really liked that.

I think I bought the generic petsmart brand, which had mediocre reviews but worked for me.  Nature’s miracle is cheaper and has better reviews.  I would probably try that if you decide to do the calming spray.
