I have moved nearly 30 times and I have never hired movers.  I think I am too cheap!

By the time you pay rental fees and gas you’re going to pay close to half your quoted cost. It sounds like you’re getting a good deal. The last time we moved we hired a company. It was $700 and completely worth it.

@misspeanut:  You know what’s funny? We’ve always bribed friends with pizza, too (never hired movers before this despite moving 10+ times as an adult). It’s like i’ve crossed some sort of life stage threshold because all of a sunned every single friend was suddenly “super busy” and “couldn’t help, sorry”. Haha. I think 29/30 seems to be the cutoff in my social group for being willing to help move. That and the fact that our king sized memory foam mattress needed to go to the 3rd floor of our townhouse!!

I have done it both ways. Sure, it saves a ton of money to move it yourself, but those movers are awesome. I used Two Men and a Truck. They were super friendly, polite and put together furniture they had to take apart. They were definitely worth the $1000 we used to move over 2.5 hours.

DH commented about how will we hire movers.  When he said that, I immediately thought of the companies that do all the packing for you too, as that’s what I’ve seen when people have a company pay.  Since we would be paying for it, it seems like a waste of money.

When he pointed it out just for the furniture though, it made sense.  We would have family to help us, but better to just pay people for the big heavy awkward stuff.  Depending on the price, we may or may not get them to do the boxes too, but we would do the packing!

On my last move, I moved a lot of little stuff with my car (every day for about three weeks on my way to and from work) and then hired movers for the rest. I loved the movers! i should have hired them from the get go. You can save money by packing your own stuff and moving little things if you like, but overall movers are money well spent.

I read a horror story of movers here on the bee recently, it left a negative impression on me for sure.

I will not move without hiring movers.  In my life they’re a necessity just like the air I breathe and the water I drink.  🙂

If we were moving from a house and had more stuff, then I would totally consider hiring movers! Actually, we would probably never have to because my Fiance is a college basketball coach and he’d just get his strong players to help us out!

OP i work for a big name moving company… just do your research if you do decide to hire someone… because let me tell you… you will have damages if you dont. i get calls everyday about it.  also watch the packers… make sure they are doing a good job wrapping items and not just throwing things in random boxes. i honestly would never let a company move me… which i know sounds horrible since i work for one. but i just know that i would do a better job.

I didn’t know there were movers! 🙂 We might be moving soon, but since we do not have that many things, we would probably do it ourselves. If I had a full house, I might consider them.

@HisNightOwl2014:  Were moving soon and well be doing it ourselves there wasnt an option for us!

Then again moving companies cost at least $500 and the van well be hiring to do it ourselves is about $150

@HisNightOwl2014:  I absolutely agree with what you said, that once you pay for a truck and gas, you might as well pay for the movers too.

I always moved myself until my last move.  We decided on movers because we were going from a third floor apartment to a fourth floor one, across a long enough distance that a truck of some kind was necessary (most of my moves as a child/teen, we never moved more than 15 minutes away from where we started, so a small U-Haul + some cars was always enough).

Having the movers was great, and I’ll probably insist on them for all our future moves.  They were efficient with both space in the truck and time spent, had extra supplies we didn’t think of (like wardrobe boxes), and finished early.  While we were still a little tired after (we helped them a lot), we weren’t super-dog-tired that we would’ve been had we done it all orurselves, and were able to get a few things sorted and unpacked right away.  It was awesome.

ETA: its a better idea to hire movers who move only.  We packed our stuff first.  I’ve heard too many horror stories of stuff getting broken.  But our movers had an insurance policy, they’d pay for damaged items, so long as we could prove we packed the item safely enough.

I moved myself every time except twice when my company moved me.  I wish I hadn’t moved myself the last time (age 32).  I now think that over 30 – or even 25 – I ought to be paying for movers and not ask friends to help move me.  They don’t want to, it’s hard work on them, you’re out of that phase when everyone helps each other and you’ve got more stuff to move.  I’m older and I prefer to spend my time in other ways now.

You can save money by packing things yourself.  Use the appropriate boxes.  Know though that most companys will not pay for breakage of things you packed yourself so pack carefully.  (Replacement value is often pretty small anyhow)  And if there’s anything particularly important, maybe move just that yourself.
