Hi Everyone, I recently got married back in June. We are planning on moving out of state in the next few months. I am not sure if I should change my name in my current state or wait until we move. I have read a few places that you need to establish residency before a name change in a new state which could take up to a year. I feel like if I change my name now I end up paying for new drivers license, passport, etc. which I may not have to if I wait. Just looking for some advice if anyone else has had the same situation? Thank You!!!

Same situation. I didn’t want to waste time doing it twice. I did change my name with social security before I moved, but that was because of my employer. I waited till I had moved out of state, which was a few months after getting married, to change my name on everything else (driver’s license, etc). Make sure you have a copy of your official marriage certificate so that you can make the change.

VivienK: the passport is a federal document so you wouldn’t need a new one if you move to a new state. I’m not sure about the driver’s license issue though.
