springlilies28 :  Communication is always the rule, as couples can have all types of arrangements for living together.

Before my husband and I got married, I contributed proportionally to our housing expenses, he made more than I did so he was able to contribute a higher amount. If we went 50/50 down the middle, then I’d be really strapped for cash and he wouldn’t even feel it, so we agreed that I would pay a percentage of my income and he’d contribute the same percentage of his income (which was a higher dollar amount due to his income being higher) so it would cover our whole housing payment. I covered utilities and we split groceries expenses.

I would just talk to him. At the end of the day it should all come out the same. If he is a decent man.

Oddly I made more when I moved in with my boyfriend, now husband, and didn’t pay a bill one and still dont. I think he makes more now. I had school debt (and a phone and insurance) to pay so I paid that instead. $25k paid off in 1.5 years. What we agreed on.

Now I still don’t pay bills at all (except phone and insurance) but pay every extra dime I make on the mortgage. Hoping to pay that off in less than 2 years. What we agreed on.

That actually saves more money in the long run for us than splitting everything.

So my point is you just have to talk with him. There is no right or wrong on a couples’ prefered arrangement. But sounds like he expects you to split it 50/50. It will all come out in the wash if you start paying half the rent and then HE starts saving for wedding. So maybe if you take over 50% then that gives him the ability to save up. It really shouldn’t be making a difference IMO.
