MrsEdamame:  When my brother and his wife moved across the country they used a realestate agent who specialized in rentals to help them find a home to rent. Perhaps its worth a shot to look up someone in the area and you can meet with them and home view when you are in town.

Last year ( June/Julyish) I made the move partly cross country. It was terrify to try and find a place especially site unseen and with the area apartment complexes not using the internet. My advice would to talk to the copmany ( assuming it’s for a job) where they recommend. My Darling Husband did that and it turned out to be the best thing for us.

Are you renting? Check out padmapper.com they gather for rent ads from various sources. It’s a pretty good site

MrsEdamame:  It could be worth registering with the local estate agents there. You can get a lot of information about areas suited to you and what you can expect to get for your budget, where.

Kind of obvious, but you will find that a good location is more expensive, so if you can compromise on that, you will probably get more space.

I would definitely chat with some agents, even over the phone now in advance.

Check out their websites if they have one and tell them the kind of house you like. Try to analyse what it is you like about them, which is more than just a simple decorating job (as you can do that in any house)

Ask each agent to line up some properties for you.

Use googlemaps and use that walking Man tool to explore areas so you don’t waste your time (i.e the house they are going to show you may be next to a quarry or a 60s eyesore build.)

Tell them what you are not prepared to compromise on (for example you might want a garden of a certain minimum size, or you don’t want to be on a main road) If may seem obvious to you but they are trying to sell houses so they will show you everything if you don’t say exactly what you want and what you will not tolerate.
