Oh and toilet paper! For gods sake put toilet paper in every bathroom when you get there first! Soap also.

Get rid of everything, starting now!! Do not waste time and money moving crap you haven’t used in a year. Take advantage of this to get rid of all the clothes you don’t wear, extra bottles of shampoo you don’t use, the random bag of rice in your pantry that you’ve yet to eat, the old “sentimental things” that don’t actually matter, old headphones, etc. Everything that you wouldn’t 100% need to replace within the next year can be trashed or donated.

Label your boxes! I recommend you pack a suitcase of the things you’ll need right off the bat, like your pillow, phone charger, and a few outfits. Everything else should be super well labeled. Beyond just “kitchen”, “bedroom”. I prefer labels like “Kitchen – utensils and food processor” and “Bathroom – makeup, medicine cabinet”. That way everything is extra easy to locate and unpack.

Be wary of your miscellaneous box. I have literally dragged a box labelled miscellaneous through three moves without unpacking it from my first move.

Just label your boxes with numbers, and on a separate sheet keep a detailed list of what is in each numbered box. And make sure to write the number on all sides of the box so you can see it no matter which way it is stacked!
