piper628 :  Any reason you are concerned about this? My doctor told me they usually test for MTHFR if you have several miscarriages. I had one and requested they still test for it as I was undergoing IVF. They did a blood test and it resulted in them needing to do another blood test to confirm if I had that mutation …..I’m not sure why but anyways I didnt have it . They said if I did I would just need extra folic acid. I went on to have a healthy baby the next round of ivf. If you are concerned i would talk to your doctor. Good luck!

When you say “pills you can actually swallow”, do you just mean you have trouble swallowing pills?

I took Garden of Life raw prenatal and it said you could open the capsules and put the contents in a smoothie or something to take it.

piper628 :  Hummm cant honestly say I know which is better follic or follate!! Can you ask your OB? I can say when I underwent ivf all my doctor told me was to take a prenatal vitamin and she was not concerned about what kind or anything. Have you been ttc a while or just trying to start it all out right? I think your should be ok on any prenatal for now if you never had any issues but like I said if you are worried I’m sure talking to your OB could ease your mind! Good luck!!

piper628 :  I was tested for MTHFR after my miscarriage tested chromosomally normal, and the test results showed that I am heterozygous for MTHFR. Which basically means I have a mild version of it. Reduces my ability to process synthetic folic acid by about 30%. If you are homozygous, it reduces your ability to process by about 70%. What this means is that you are not only not getting the benefit of folate in your system, but you have excess synthetic folic acid floating around in your bloodstream. Anyhow, I didn’t want to take any chances so I changed to Zahler prenatal + DHA, which includes a methylated form of folate. I also have trouble swallowing certain types of pills and I find the Zahler prenatals to be very easy to swallow.

piper628 :  methylfolate is the preferred form by the human body, regardless of whether or not you have this mutation. Same with methylcobalamin, which is the better form of B12, not cyanocobalamin, which contains a cyanide molecule.

Buy prenatal vitamins from a reputable store like Whole Foods, Sprouts, or Natural Grocers. The prenatals that you find in pharmacies or places like WalMart or Target generally have the synthetic form of everything. Target has some better options but, not many.

I have Celiac disease, as do 2 of my daughters, and I am anal about what goes into our bodies. I wish everyone was because we could change the food and supplement industry. Celiac makes you pay attention to the small details in things like this because your absorption is already compromised and you end up with more intolerances and problems. I am 30 weeks pregnant with my 4th baby but this is my first Celiac pregnancy and I’ve had a rough go of it with vitamins and anemia.

My midwife tested me for the MTHFR mutation because she suspected it based on my health history and I tested positive. I was only seeing her for well-woman visits at the time and it was a couple years before starting TTC. She told me to start taking prenatal with methylfolate (Thorne brand specifically), so I did. It can’t hurt to get tested if you’re concerned about it.

piper628 :  I would say these are the size of a typical capsules, but you have to take 3 per day.

I’ve had 3 mc in a row.. unknown cause. I’ve been taking methylfolate for a few weeks in hopes that it makes a difference. Bought the LifeExtension brand on Amazon & take 3 a day.
