What are these spasms like? Does it feel like a muscle cramp? If so, your salt levels are off… probably potassium specifically. Eat more bananas.

@mrsSonthebeach:  Yep! My mom always told me to eat a banana!

Is it your calf or your shin? I know you said both, but it could make a difference. Spasms are pretty common in both areas, but if it was a more constant, dull, and has smaller spasms but more in your shin, then it might be a shin splint type of thing you have going on. Just really try to stretch the muscles as much as possible! And like mrsSonthebeach said – bananas! =)

@chocolatecoveredstrawberry:  I don’t see sarcasm. They simply googled the question for you.

Quick answer: More potassium.

Better answer: See a doctor if it persists.

I used to get them literally every single night, they would wake me up out of a sleep!  Once I was laying on the couch watching tv, and I got one so bad it actually made me pass out!

So I went to my doctor, and he said I was dehydrated.  So I started drinking gatorade and water every single day.  I did notice a major difference!

However, I don’t get them in my calves now, but I get them in my toes!  Have you ever gotten them in your toes!?  It’s unbearable!  And I still drink gatorade every day, but I have slacked off with the water.

So I say stay hydrated.. Try the gatorade for about a month, and let me know how you feel! Wink

@Rubbs:  I hate when I get them in my toes!

Yeah, its normal to get them every now and again. =) But if you don’t feel better after the suggestions about potassium and drinking more water or gatorade, then definitely get checked! You are right that it could be something more serious!

It also could be because of over use of the muscles – or not using them enough. So if either of those seem like a possibility.. then do the opposite for a little bit. Heat is good too to relax those muscles…

I hope it feels better soon! I hate spasms…

@chocolatecoveredstrawberry:  Yeah, I think so cuz of the electrolytes.  I definitely drink more Gatorade than water and I can’t remember the last time I got one in my calves.  I’m just trying to figure out how to stop them from my toes.

Toes to the nose when this happens!!

I get them really bad sometimes in the middle of a dead sleep. I wake up in so much pain!  Drink more water to stay hydrated, and like others said, more potassium, eat more bananas!!
