We have to choose the type of music that will play at our cocktail hour but we won’t want to choose something that only we like. We need to choose something that everyone will like, will set the mood for everyone, keep everyone entertained and not falling sleep.
Which genre of music is best?

I always liked upbeat, classic standards (which I guess would fall under Jazz/Alternative?)–Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Ella Fitzgerald, etc. etc. because they’re generally agreeable to everyone, young and old, and they’re sort of happy and swingy, without being too much.
You can mix in contemporary music too, though–eclecticism never hurts!

We did classic “lounge”/rat pack music. Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, etc. Quite a few of our guests came up to us and asked who picked out the music because they liked it.

I like the idea of jazz with cocktails

I also think classic would be best. People know it but it’s not intrusive.

Jazz for cocktail hour is pretty popular. It’s great background music to allow your guests to mingle and chat, yet still have a bit of familiarity that makes people feel comfortable.

Jazz all the way! It’s fun, light, unobtrusive.
