I’ve been tossing around the idea of hiring a musician for the ceremony and/or cocktail hour then transition to a DJ for the reception.
Have any of you done it this way before?
How does it work logistically?
For example, I see a musician for the ceremony working just fine bc everyone will be within a small area albeit outdoors. But I’m a tad worry abotu the sound for the cocktail hour because we want the cocktail hour to flow inside and outside.
Would there be some sort of “mic” near the musician then the sound will travel through the spaces via speakers?
P.S. Any suggestions for musicians in the NYC/Long Island area would be appreciated as well!

I’m doing this combo also but I don’t know how the logistics are for your venue. For our cocktail our musicians will move from the ceremony area to the outside cocktail area (about 30 yards). Then our reception will be indoors/outdoors with the dance floor and DJ inside and the dining tables on the patio. The dining area has loudspeakers.

If it’s a guitarist you can ask them to move throughout the cocktail hour? Maybe your dj can rig a system where the musician can plug into the inside sound system while playing outside?

thats what we are doing! Our musician will have a mic by her so that everyone can hear it really well.
