I just found a DJ that we really like and it’s a really good deal to have him do the music at the ceremony too. The problem is that my Fiance has had his heart set on having someone play the violin at our ceremony. I have yet to find anyone that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg, and it also means that we would have to rent a microphone, and speakers so that our guests could hear us (it’s an outdoor ceremony), whereas that’s included with the dj.
I realized though that I have never actually been to a wedding with a DJ at the ceremony. So I’m just curious how many bees have been to a wedding with the DJ at the ceremony or have had one for their own wedding and what your experience was like.
I’d love to hear anyone’s pros and cons for either.

Oky, so stupid here voted before reading the WHOLE thing. I didn’t realize you meant for the ceremony. We had a harpist at our ceremony & she came w/ her own amp. Maybe you’ll be able to find a violinist w/ the same sort of set up 🙂

lol that’s okay, I just changed the name of the post so that it wouldn’t get confusing. Thanks for your input! I’ll try to see if I can find a musician with an amp.

Okay, I voted before you changed the name.
We are having MUSICIANS for our ceremony, not a DJ like I voted. We’re having a string quartet. 🙂
That said, I’ve heard music simply played through the speakers before, and that worked fine, as long as there was someone manning it.

Our wedding isn’t going to be super fancy. Not causal at all, but I just feel like a string quartet would feel a little out of place at my wedding, as much as I love them. So I think music playing might be a bit better, thanks for sharing your experience with it!

We used our DJ for ceremony music, and it worked out great. We used instrumental versions of songs we loved (either guitar or violin) and the music was beautiful. A plus was that she was able to handle a last minute music change very easily. 🙂

My ceremony is in a church, so we have a vocalist and an organist. The reception music will be done by a DJ.

I’m getting a harpist for my garden ceremony and then using an iPod for the reception 🙂

We had a DJ (sound man) play our music. I wanted all “non-traditional” music, and was nervous about someone playing. I also didn’t want someone to play for the reason that I think it can be a bit distracting (sometimes beautiful, sometimes distracting). I thought our music was perfect! : )
