So I live in Iowa… generally the prices for things are lower than cities such as Chicago, NYC, LA. I live in one of the bigger cities in the state but was looking in neighboring cities for photographers. I contacted one in a fairly small community (25,000 people) and the photographer quoted me $15,000 for wedding day services that included two photographers, a videographer with wedding video and raw footage, and reprint rights with a $200 print credit but no actual prints! I was shocked. In my town, I could have gotten the same thing for about $8,000 so especially coming from a smaller community, I found that absolutely ridiculous!

I think the most ridiculous fee I have come across is for sure limos. Fiance and I are having our wedding on the beach about 45 minutes outside of the city, so we figured we’re going to need a way home at the end of the night since we’ll be drinking obviously. I looked into what it would cost for just the ride home. All I’ve found charge at least 4 hours minimum. One I found charged just over $3K for 4 hours. I almost died.

One venue we looked at charged drinks by consumption… a half-pint of (crappy) mid-strength beer was $8, a glass of wine was $9, cocktails were $20, and champagne was charged by the bottle at $160 per bottle. This was on top of the $12,000 minimum spend for food. Jeepers!
Everything is expensive here, but I was surprised by limos ($1500 for 3 hours, with a $200 charge for every 15 minutes over time) and DJs (somewhere between $1100 – 1500 for 6 hours coverage).

@MrsPanda99: $5 a slice just to cut the cake!? WTF!

The ones that blew me away were rentals (tent, tables, chairs, etc) and lemonade/tea from the caterers. The rentals we had to have but we made our own lemonade and tea from a mix for about 5% the cost from the caterers.

$7500 to rent a barn for the evening. Barn is the only thing included, no tables, chairs, linens, nothing! Outrageous!

I had to have my dress cleaned twice because it was a sample gown. The dress cost $500 (marked down from $1500). The first clean, the clean after the wedding, and the preservation cost $1200. I paid double the cost of the dress to get the friggin’ thing clean! However, I believe it was well spent because it looks amazing.
About three or four of the florists I looked at had a minimum spend of $1000 which would have got me one bridal bouquet and one bridesmaid’s. Um WHAT. I got my bouquet, two bridesmaids’ bouquets, three buttonholes, and a toss bouquet for around $350.

Gee, where do I start? Let’s see…
$8500 for photography, 7 hours. I’ve seen some amazing work that would be worth every penny if you had it; but this lady was just ok.
$750 to use non-preferred caterer, on top of $4000+ rental fee. (Sadly, I’m paying this. Caterer gave us a great price & we’re actually saving $)
$850 for extra hour, just the venue’s fee
$7000 for 4 hour venue rental, nothing but the space. Also only allowed choice of 2 caterers who acted like I was a charity case when I said I had $17,000 budget for 150 people.
$650 for dress sash (um, is this a joke?)
They take advantage of your dreams about your big day. It makes me sick sometimes.

$200 for a nirmal looking veil. Right…. That’s $5 shipped from China. This whole wedding biz is nothing but ripped off. They think that since the brides are happy getting married, they will pay at any price. Not me! Purleasessssss
