We just took our 3, almost four year old in a tube riding with someone else for the first time this weekend (she is able to swim, wore a life jacket, and only rode when the lake was calm). I wouldn’t do it with a 1 year old. Darling Husband grew up on a lake so his comfort level is much higher than mine, I thought it was almost too rough for her, but she is a wild child and had a blast.
ETA: Dirty Delete #1 (now 10 was about the same age when she went for the first time. And we put her in skis for the first time around 7 or 8)
A one-year old?! If it were my kid, it would be hell-to-the-no!
I’m not a parent but I think that’s a terrible idea. If I saw someone with a one year old on a tube being towed around by a speed boat, I would seriously question their parenting.
A child should be able to swim (at the VERY LEAST dog paddle & float) on their own before being towed by a boat, regardless of how calm the water is. There is no way in hell any 1 year old of mine would be going tubing behind a boat. (And I too spend plenty of time behind a boat growing up)
No way! I’ve been tubing with my nephews. In the river. We went overboard. It was SCARY!!! Luckily, their dad is a paramedic, in the coast guard, etc. It was intense and the boys were terrified. They were over 5. A baby? Forget about it.
absolutly not and as a mother i would be flipping my lid at even the suggestion…not only that i dont think you can legally do that….a big HELL to the NO!
1 Year old… like seriously ???!!!#$%*
One F-ed up idea if you ask me.
Sh!t happens to adults let alone kids towed behind boats all the time (I live in Ontario… which is WATER country… and spent / spend tons of time on the water every summer)
Maybe when the kiddie is 6, or 8 or so, and a lot more in control of his physical presence (limbs, upper body strength, a bit of swimming ability etc) and has some basic skills needed to enjoy water sports. Not to mention an ability to communicate… if he got into danger. One Year olds do not talk !!
PLUS a good life jacket, on a calm day, on a calm lake, and the boat going really really slow.
But I doubt that is what your Hubby had in mind.
Don’t rush life… there is plenty of time to do age-appropriate things with your kids. In time.
Enjoy WHERE they are now in their development / life … and IMO Tubing at 1 isn’t one of them (otherwise, I’d be one of those calling Children’s Aid on you… for INAPPROPRIATE choices as a Parent for the Welfare of your child… as this would most certainly be a case for Child Endangerment)
A one year old? Not so much. My daughter started going into the ocean at age 2, and that was off the platform of an anchored boat wearing a life preserver while my husband held her and I was in the water with my arms supporting her.
