The cake was the one part of the wedding that I was really disappointed with. Luckily, it was very low on the list of priorities for me so I didnt really care that much. I was just emabarassed to have such an ugly cake out for all the guests to see.
This is the inspiration photo we showed her. We wanted the same kind of lines, but with wavy lines and round tiers.

And this is what we got..thick broken lines that looked like a 4 year old did it.

I told myself I’d honestly review all my vendors, but I still feel bad about leaving her a bad review, so I haven’t done it yet. The more I look at the cake the more I can’t believe she actually thought it was okay. Oh well, at least people ate it!

Wow, the cake looks pretty good, except for those lines. I’m so sorry. I just can’t believe someone would deliver something that looks like that. She should have just not done the lines if she couldn’t make them straight and even. Are you getting a partial refund???

I’m not a professional baker, but given what you requested… that the tiers have wavy line and circular cakes… I’d say that you got what you paid for… The example that inspired you looks like a pastry chef made it. (It is definitely a high quality cake, your cake looks like it was probably made by someone who makes a good cake… but is not a highly trained expert.) While it sounds like it would be a simple thing, even wavy lines can be difficult to make. The reason I say that it looks like you got what you paid for… is that my guess is that you got to see your baker’s example cakes, and gave her the inspiration cake photo to use as your idea. Since it was not one of her own cakes, she would have used it to design something similar made to match your requests. I think that she did that… but I can totally understand how that didn’t match your vision. I think this is a cautionary tale for brides… look at your baker’s personal examples… if they don’t match your vision…then keep looking for another baker!

I think the lines are not up to standard. You should leave an honest review so that other future customers can be warned. Can I ask how much you paid for the cake?

so sorry! this cake is not up to standard. as for the pp saying you got what you paid for…your baker should have told you that your inspiration was not possible to replicate. there is no excuse for taking your inspiration picture and letting you think that he/she could do it when he/she so clearly can’t. your baker deserves a scathing review because they weren’t honest with you! i would also ask for a partial refund for misleading you.

Am I the only one who thinks it looks lopsided? Definitely didn’t get what you paid for, I agree an honest review is in order.

I think it’s just the picture/camera, since the wall isn’t straight.

@lezlers: No, you’re not the only one…I thought that as well.
I would also leave an honest review. I’m assuming she reassured you she could make your vision happen, and it didn’t. If she didn’t think she could do it, then she needed to let you know.

i totally see what you mean about the lines, but if you had posted it and said “i loved my cake” i might not have noticed… so i wouldn’t worry about what the guests thought. NO one notices all the little details as much as you do. except perhaps past and future brides..and perhaps only comparing it with what they want for their wedding!
but since brides do care and notice. then i would still leave an honest review. since the cake is nice overall, you can say good and bad things. and even explain that the bad happened probably cuz of what MissBliss said.

Well, I’m going to have to disagree a bit. I’ts kind of okay. It really isn’t that bad……I mean I’ve seen worse. Sorry you didn’t like it. I don’t believe it would have been a big deal for your guests. But , no, it’ doesn’t look like your inspiration pic….

Aww I had a major cake fail too! Yours kind of looks like mine – lopsided and chunky! 🙂
First pic is my inspiration, second is what they gave to me….

I would leave an honest review. The cake tiers and the flowers don’t look bad, but the lines are awful. They look like they were smeared.

A lot depends on who you hired. If you spent top dollar you really deserved more and a better cake. If you found “a really good deal” then it’s probably on par with what you paid… I’m really sorry it was a disappointment though ;-( I would be too…

The cake was $5 per slice so it came out to be $600.
My main issue with it is the smeared lines. To me, looked like the cake got bumped around a lot in th delivery process. And its lopsided. If she couldn’t do the lines like the inspiration photo then she should have told me. But based on her drawing at the consultation and the pictures of her previous work I didnt think it would be a problem. I almost think she kinda forgot what we wanted since our meeting with her was so long ago. Whatever – I’m not mad about it, just disappointed. Everything else at the wedding was great so I’m happy!
