I booked my caterer MONTHS ago and paid a 50% deposit! I, admittedly, got a great deal and I think they probably could have charged more. Anyways, they just canceled on me and are mailing my deposit back. I have a contract!!! Can they do that? I am from a very “destination wedding” location and caterers are booked up!

What does your contract say? It should outline cancelation by both parties.

I think since they are giving you your deposit back, they are in the clear. Can you look into SF restaurants catering your wedding? If the “real” caterers are booked, that could be a good option.

It just seems so wrong! What’s the point of a contract if it doesn’t protect you? It certainly protects them!

Does your contract outline cancellation policies?

Yes, they can usually do that.
Start calling caterers tomorrow. A lot of them can handle multiple weddings.
Ask your caterer that is canceling if they can help pull some strings with any professional contacts they may have. A caterer may be willing to fit you in if one of their peers asks them.
I really think you’re going to be able to find some delicious catering. 🙂

We planned our entire wedding in 7.5 months, our caterer quit TWO DAYS before the wedding, and we still found another caterer. You’ll be fine.

@NDfan2009: luckily you are getting your deposit back. perhaps they are closing the business. can recommend another caterer for you. start researching asap.
my previous wedding had the caterer quit only a few weeks prior to the wedding. i found a replacement within a few days.
