Soooo… my big boss is a retiring Dean of our medical school and he’s been cleaning out his office for about a week now. He loads up a little cart and has been dumping it in the recycle bin or shred box.
I guess he got tired of doing it, because now he wheels it over to Miss X, his assistant, for her to do it. She was working on something else today, and she pretty much ignored him. When he asked why the cart wasn’t emptied and back in his office, she said, “Because it’s pretty much the lowest thing on my priority list right now.”
He went back into his office and had her come in. You could hear raised voices, but not what was being said. The problem is, she’s been walking around saying “Can you believe him???” and telling the story over and over again.
I’ve just been dodging her, but I think she was wrong. He may be leaving at the end of the month, but he’s still our Dean.

How awkward for the rest of you!! Good luck!

Haha, it might be awkward now but will be a good story to tell later on down the track.

She was wrong to react that way, but I agree with her about priorities. If he’s cleaning out his office, he doens’t have anything better to do, but she still has other work she needs to get done. I mean, how much farther away is the recycling that he can’t do it himself?! Sheesh. Some men.

As his assistant, aren’t his priorities her priorities? Regardless of what she was working on?

@Talishazwi: Ditto this.
And if your boss gives you something to do and you have big priority things you need to get done, usually you can deal with it by saying, “I’m working on x that’s due at 3:00 tomorrow. Can I put that aside to do this other assignment, or can I get to assignment y when I’m done with x?”
How awkward for everyone! Does she have a tense relationship with him in general?

Something similar happened at work with my dep. today as well! It must be the weather 😉
Seriously though, it’s extremely unprofessional, awkward, and can make for a potentially hostile work environment.

is it a full moon because on tuesday about 9am i walked out of my office and said to my CFO that i couldnt be here today because i was going to snap so i left and worked from home the rest of the day
i think your coworker is in the wrong, if she has other priorites she needs to calmly explain that to him but she is still his assistant and he is still the Dean and that needs to be respected

Wow, I’ve thought stuff like that before but never had the nerve to actually say it. It makes it awkward for everyone around, but honestly, high five to her. Being an assistant myself, I hate when people ask me to do something like that when I’m trying to get stuff done that is urgent. And really, how far of a walk is it to recycle?
Anyway, I do think she shouldn’t have said it out of respect. He is still her boss and she should have been respectful to him until the end. I hope it doesn’t make it awkward for you the rest of the time the dean is there.

@GreenGables: Their relationship has been pretty normal up until now.
I’m crossing my fingers that she doesn’t bring it up again tomorrow!
