Boyfriend or Best Friend and I went to spend Thanksgiving with my family. Having ordered a ring that will arrive soon (YAY!) he went to talk to my dad. Well, from there it spiraled out of our control. Boyfriend or Best Friend told Dad. Dad *had* to tell mom. Siblings walked into the room mid conversation. I walked in and my mom yelled “Congratulations” while my sister in law still had no idea what they were talking about. I told her it was supposed to be a surprise until the ring came and he had a chance to do a proposal, but it didn’t take. My brother walked in and asked “What’s going on?” She answered “They’re engaged!”
I find it mildly hilarious that my parents have no ability to keep things secret. Later my mom asked me if she could tell everyone. I reiterated that we wanted to wait a couple weeks for the ring and official proposal. She agreed, but we’ll see how long she lasts.

Does your dad know my dad?! It could have been worse, trust me.

I would have been mad! You guys were wanting to keep it a secret until the ring came in and it spread like a forest fire. What if he hadn’t mentioned it to you yet? A lot of people I know ask the fathers permission before going to the girl so you wouldn’t have found out until the ring came in. No one should tell family that stuff except for you guys. When I got pregnant I was able to tell just a couple people and then someone posted it on my Facebook page saying congrats on the baby and I still hadn’t told even HALF of my/his family! People should let you spread the news because it’s not their secret to tell.
Congrats on the engagement though!

Well at least everyone is happy and excited for you guys! Congrats 🙂 (even if it is a few weeks early!)

I would’ve been upset, but sometimes ya can’t control it. No need to get upset over something thats out of your control. Now, you know WHO NOT to say anything to when you want to keep a secret. This is just the beginning … lol 🙂

@bakerella: LMAO! I love how they receive specific instruction to hold the news until a certain date and just can’t handle the excitement. Silly dads.
So far the news has stayed within the immediate families, which is a relief. I didn’t want half the family calling asking why so and so knew but not them. At first I was a little perturbed, but oh well. Everyone’s excited and I get my official proposal soon!

Something similar happened to my cousin. I don’t know all the details, but while he and his now fiance were on a trip to visit her parents, he asked her father’s permission and was planning on proposing later in the week. Immediately after her dad said yes, the dad walked into the room and said “R has something to say” Apparently, my cousin still had the ring on him, and decided to just drop to his knee and do it there. Not quite as he had planned, but it makes for a cute story, and they have it on video too.
It makes for a fun story, and it must be a great feeling to have your family be so excited for you 🙂
