Hi bees! I am in the stages of figuring out with my SO what my e-ring will be, YAY! We always *knew* we wanted to get married and he has officially asked me and I’ve said yes. Then he wondered how I would like to do the e-ring part. So I thought about that and decided I would like to use a stone that I already have – it’s a diamond I’ve owned for about 10 years. It was a “life is too short” impulse purchase I made while I was emotional shortly after my dad suddenly passed away. I am very attached to this diamond. I set it in a five stone setting (see the picture) and people always think it’s an engagement ring, which always frustrated me (even when I was wearing it on my right hand they ask! grr). I am in love with this diamond and like the idea that it will become the symbol of my future with my guy.
I know my SO would LOVE to be responsible for picking out the setting himself, so I have been lurking around looking at every ones beautiful rings here! I think my major preferences are art deco/antique, the halo, or classic solitaire.
So how does this work, do you just march into the store with the loose stone and pick a semi mount there? What are the options for SO? I just hand him the ring and he goes?
On a side note, I still like the 5 stone setting I have and might want to put a moissy in it. Can I order a loose one and have some do it? Any one done anything like this?
Adding stats because I like stats! The stone is not GIA cert, but the jeweler I bought it from said it is 1.03 carat, “J” color (faces up white to me), and VS1. And I think it’s sparkly and love it 🙂

For settings there are a few options:
-Check out a reputable jeweler and see the settings available. Sometimes they can mount it there, sometimes they can custom make something for you.
-Check out online vendors that have settings available. If you send them your stone, they can set it for you. My ring’s from James Allen; I liked setting and we sent them my stone. I think Whiteflash and Brian Gavin Diamonds set stones as well.
For the 5 stone setting, you can just order a loose stone and have it set. You might even be able to send the ring and have the stone set if you do it through Moissaniteco; you’d have to ask if they’re willing to do this.

I would highly recommend buying your setting online. You get way more variety and generally I find the diamond quality is higher. (loads of chain jewelry stores offer inferior diamonds for an inflated price)
I have done that in the past for pendants, rings and earings. I then get them set at a jewellers. If you go to ebay and type in semi mounts you will find heaps of styles to choose from. They will usually tell you what shape and size stone in mm will fit in the semi mount.
lord of gems is a great site and I vouch for their workmanship and quality.
You can also go to a jewelry store and try on rings. when you find one tell them you would like to get your diamond reset. Most stores will oblige you.
good luck on your ring quest!!!
oh yeah…Congrats on your engagement!!!

Thank you abirdword 🙂 Maybe I can let SO figure out what store he’d like to work with.
I was a little hesitant to even suggest using my existing stone because I know he will enjoy the process of picking and getting the ring, so I thought making him use this stone would throw a wrench in that. What I want to do is show him pictures of my preferences, and then he can do what he wants, when he is ready. Maybe I could order a loose CZ or stone in a one carat size and he could have the same jeweler that he works with pop it in at the same time!
I guess the most overwhelming part is narrowing down the setting preferences! There are so many beautiful styles and I find myself waffling daily!

cmsgirl – Thank you! I was sort of wondering about online too, I have never been afraid of purchasing things online and have had good experiences, but then I was concenred that local jewelers would not want to work with stuff not bought in their store or something – hopefully that doesn’t happen ever?
Thanks for the lord of gems reference, I haven’t seen that and I will go check it out now 🙂
So another possibility is that SO could purchase the mount online and then go to a jewler with everything. I feel like he’d get a better $ value that way too, possibly.
Thank you for the congratulations – no one in our real life even knows, we have been keeping it our own little secret, we are probably not going to tell them until the ring is there and on! But this is the only place I’ve shared this news. I hope no one I know IRL lurks here and recongizes my ring I posted, I’ll be busted then!
