This all started a month or two ago. We have a one-year old rescue dog (we believe she is part pit-bull and part border collie, but we aren’t sure). She is about 50 pounds. One day I was running with her outside and she started wailing and holding up her right hind leg. She eventually stretched it out and seemed to be fine. This has happend a few times since then, but without any whimpering/crying and she seems to know how to stretch it back into place. When we took her to the vet for a scheduled vaccination, he said that she may have a slipped/luxating patella (which means that the groove where her kneecap sits may not be deep enough, allowing the knee cap to “slip” out of place.
This weekend we were at my parents’ house and she was running around with my mom’s dogs. I have NEVER heard a dog scream like she did, but she has now slipped her left hind leg. She was down for about an hour, pretty consistently crying in pain. Just when we were ready to take her to the vet, I was massaging her knee and she let it stretch out so it could pop back into place.
This morning the left knee slipped again and I had to carry her home from our walk (and she is HEAVY!). Once we got inside, she was fine.
The vet mentioned that there is surgery available, which will likely cost upwards of $2,000 per knee. I love my baby and can’t stand for her to be in pain, but this is an expense we just can’t handle right now! I fear that it will continue happening.
I am wondering if any of you Bees have experienced this with your dogs before. Did you choose surgery? Did your dog get better/worse over time? Are there any supplements or at-home remedies to ease this? I am so stressed and worried 🙁
