weatherbug:  How long have you had the dog walker? My dog would be fine during the day, but if I came home and left shortly again, she’d act up. I wonder if he’s getting anxiety about getting out half way through the day, and then being left AGAIN?

That’s so weird that things suddenly changed. My dog also stays in her crate while we’re at work (and at night) and is totally fine. Have you noticed anything different with his eating/bathroom routine? If anything is off he might be sick?

weatherbug:  Maybe he is ready to be out of the crate? We crate trained our puppy but he hasn’t been crated during the day since he has been 1.5 or so. Leave the door open to his crate- he can come and go as he pleases that way.

bluelinebride:  i agree.

weatherbug:  maybe you can see how he does out of the crate in spurts of time – run an errand and leave him for 10 mins, 20 mins, etc and build up to see how he does? we got our rescue 3 years ago and he was out of the crate within the year.

did you get new neighbours?  Do neighbours have animals?  Did your dogwalker start walking a new dog?

weatherbug:  I always thought all dogs cried for their owners a little when they left but they eventually settle back down and find something to do. My dogs certainly do but they hang out after a few minutes of crying. Unless he’s trashing your house if you’re gone for any length of time that sounds like normal behavior to me.

Did a delivery or moving guys come to an apartment around you? My dog freaks with thunder and loud noises/strangers so if the neighbors above us were moving or having huge things delivered she goes nuts barking. Maybe something was going on outside that was over by the time you came home?

weatherbug:  I agree with other people, could be several things I guess you just need to figure one out?? I crate my dogs and I leave on a radio so they don’t hear outside noise (hopefully). I’m told one will howl from time to time. They do have aroma therapy plug ins that are supposed to be calming. Could it be he’d actually prefer an open crate – the kind that are just wire? Are you able to set up some sort of web cam? Seems they’re making them cheaper now. Does the dog walker put anything in his crate to occupy him as he leaves the apartment? Peanut butter stuff kong for example?

Do you walk him before you go to work? Is there any way your dog walker could walk him for longer?

My goal would be wear his butt out so he spends his crate time sleeping instead of getting anxiety. Maybe even get a backpack or something so his walks are more productive.

My dogs are out during the day and sleep in their crates at night. The only time they freak out in their crates is when they’ve spent the day sleeping and I didn’t wear them out before bedtime

weatherbug:  WHat kind of dog is he? We have a 3 year old Boston Terrier and she has bad anxiety. Like when bad weather comes up, new ppl come in our home or we go to town, she will pee on the towel i put on her kennel. When we are home we have to keep her out of the kennel, i have bought her a thunder shirt it has helped.

He may be sensing something he doesnt like around the house. He may be trying wo warn you of something??

If he is a good boy and doesn’t destroy stuff, I would definitely try to ween him out of being crated during the day, ASAP.  Start by leaving him maybe in a single room or gated part of the house, and gradually give him more access as he gets used to it.  Crates are meant for puppy training and occassional use only, not every single day for an adult dog.  That is way too much.
