So, when Fiance and I moved out here to NYC for him to go to grad school, we got into student couples housing. Yay! Cheap and no brokers, whoop. But the school told us pets weren’t allowed. Boo. We have the best puppy in the world, and I actually think taking care of the dog together as a team is part of the reason we finally got engaged after six years of dating! But the school told us dogs weren’t allowed in our building, so we decided to have our pup stay with FI’s parents until our wedding next June, when we planned to move out and find dog-friendly housing.
THEN we got here and our super told us that dogs ARE allowed, and we don’t even have to pay a deposit! Yay! But we haven’t been able to afford shipping the puppy back here. We plan to bring him back with us over Christmas, since I’ve finally been making progress on the job front. The dog has been on our minds a lot the past couple days, and we keep talking about how much fun it’ll be when we have him here!! There’s a huge park across the street and everything, and we can’t wait!
So today, I get a call from FI’s mom. Pup ate a toy that we gave him during our ENGAGEMENT photos, and it got stuck in his colon. He was up all last night vomiting and tried to poop and couldn’t. Yup, he needed surgery. He’ll be in the animal hospital another night before he gets to come home. 🙁 I’m so worried about him and am so sad that he ate a toy from our e-pics – it’s hard to look at those photos now! They said he’ll be okay, but I am one worried dog momma, and wish I could just give him a big hug.

(Sorry for the long story; for some reason I felt context was important…)

Sending hugs and good thoughts your way. I’ll keep your pup in my thoughts!! I know how stressful it can be when your dog has to be put under let alone have surgery. Hang in there; I’m sure he will be ok!

Aw! Poor puppy! He’ll need lots of love. I also recommend a t-shirt to keep him from licking his stitches!

@MightySapphire: T-shirt would be a good idea, except I honestly think he would eat it. Ha and :(. I’m sure they’ll give him one of those plastic collars!!! Poor pup.

He’s gorgeous – hopefully he’ll be okay! Is he out of surgery yet? Make sure his vet sends him home with post-operative pain medication.
(And on a non-puppy-related topic, yay for not having to pay a NYC broker. That whole process is highway robbery.)

He has ten staples in his stomach and is wearing a cone of shame, but apparently has been bounding with joy as per usual this morning. Oh, pup!

And yes – yay for not paying a broker! Plus, in three years when we move out, we’ll have a reference from our super, my employer, and will have established residency – so it should be way easier by then to find a place.

Oh so glad he’s ok! Try to keep him from jumping around, lol. He’s going to bust a stitch and your parents will have blood all over. (It’s freaky, my Rottie did that once.)
What CUTE pictures! (Where’s a pic of the toy? I’d kinda like to avoid giving my dog a toy he could eat!)

The toy is from Target. It’s small in our engagement photos, so here’s a link to it online. He chewed it into pieces and ate the hunks. I hate to say it’s not safe – it took him four months to take it apart! And I’m not sure dogs who aren’t labradors would feel compelled to gnaw on it until they could swallow it. But the bone strands are VERY thick (thicker than they might seem in the photo) and it’s really alarming to think that he swallowed them! I’m just glad he didn’t choke to death.

I’m so glad he’s okay! Good luck keeping him calm with those staples. I suspect that will be a rather challenging aspect of his recovery
