lurkingvee : One of our dogs did this wheb he was young (from memory – first year) we told him off and would tap his nose too. He did grow out of it, hopefully that will give you hope. I have heard it can be a sign of a nutritional deficiency.

Ours is a behavior issue.  He now has a collar that vibrates (doesn’t shock) but everytime he goes to try and eat poop we correct him and redirect.  It seems to solve the problem.

We put crushed pineapple in their food and they won’t eat their poop as much.

Interesting! I have a 6 month old puppy that likes to eat poop, too, but not his own! His poop of choice is the cat’s and the cows’.

Oh thank god, a thread for fellow poop-breath pupper owners.  My girl is nearly 2 and still doing it – one of our family dogs had done it as a puppy but grew out of it, so I thought this girl would do the same.  She goes after only our older dog’s poop, not her own.  They’re on the same high caliber dog food but I think I might get her bloodwork done just in case.

Definitely going to try the crushed pineapple though!  (Which sort of ties in to the OP trying meat tenderizer – pineapples have an enzyme that tenderizes proteins, which must have a specific taste).

Well I’ve been putting a tablespoon of pineapple juice in my dog’s food for the past 2 weeks and I think it’s safe to say, he LOVES pineapple poop!!! Guess I’ll have to try something else. I wonder if the OP ever found a solution to this?

My puppy is doing this too, going to try the pineapple and replying to follow this thread!

My dogs eats poop, occasionally, but never their own.  If they can get hold of cat poop, horse poop, deer poop, etc, it’s apparently an exciting treat.  **gag**  But they have demonstrated no interest in eating the poop of other canines (coyotes, dogs, etc).

My parents’ dog is horrifically coprophagic, however!  He eats any and all kinds of poop, including his own, if he’s not very closely watched.  My parents have tried everything, and nothing has worked.
