So my dress arrived today and I was super excited to get to try it on. I went straight from work to the salon. I get the dress on and it does not fit. Based on my measurements in October the salon ordered my dress. I have been working with a trainer (she is evil) and I have lost about 25 pounds and 12 inches since then which is great for me, crappy for the dress apparently. I said to the lady “that’s ok we can just alter it to fit” She started “clucking” (that sound people make with their tongue) then suggested I sell the dress and order a new one. – What the heck? I don’t want to sell my dress and order a new one. I want this dress made to fit me. Isn’t that what alterations are for? It is February the wedding is not until September. 7 months to change it. Has anyone else heard of alterations not being able to be done to a dress?

Do you have a picture of your gown? Most gowns can be altered, but there are a few that can’t.

I’m sure if it was SUPER big it would be difficult to alter, but I would think they should be able to do it. I would go to an alterations person outside of the bridal shop. They are easier to work with in my opinion plus a whole lot cheaper. Good luck and congrats on the weight loss!

This kind of sounds right. My mother in law was a seamstress for neimans for over 30 years and even she warned me that a custom ordered dress can only be altered (properly without compromising the style) up or down 2 sizes. The bridal salon also warned me of this 2 sizes up or down and they added that if depends on the maker of the dress. So I ordered a size 12 that would mean it can only go up as far as a 16(if enough material) or down to a size 8. Congrats on the weight loss!! Its amazing, if I lost that much weight I would gladly buy another dress.

I was told the same as 15happyyears. 2 sizes up or 2 sizes down. 25 pounds is a lot of weight! Go try on new dresses! September is a long way away and I think you’ll be blown away by how great you look! 🙂

Congrats on the healthy lifestyle change! Are you planning on losing more weight before the wedding? They won’t even fit me for my dress until 6 weeks out because people change so much leading up to a wedding. If you did buy a dress that can’t be altered enough to fit you, when you look for a new one, be sure to consider that and get one that will accommodate any future weight loss.
Sorry, I know you want to hear that it can be altered, but I don’t know a thing about sewing.
