So I got a fitted dress, mermaid cut. The sample I tried on was a bit tight in my hips, so we ordered up two sizes that would fit my hips and allow me to sit, but my torso is much much smaller than my butt and hips. Even in the sample one that was two sizes smaller, they had to clip up the torso about two inches. So today I tried it on for the first time, and it is HUGE. They say they do this all the time and can alter it down, but I just don’t see how. I’m trying to be trusting, but it isn’t fitted at ALL.
Have any of you had this experience? Where they able to alter it to fit perfectly?
I’m in tears, I just, can’t believe it is possible to make this fit.

@strawberrybanana:Seamstresses can work magic with fabric. Wait until your 2nd fitting–I’m sure you’re in good hands.

@strawberrybanana: Relax and take a deep breath! My lower half is much wider than my upper half, so I ordered two sizes up as well. When I got the dress, I looked like a beast — since the dress was stiff and had boning, it looked like my torso was actually that big and I was straight up and down. Not to worry though, once I went to my fitting and they started pinning it, it looked as gorgeous as I remembered it looking when I tried it on in the store.

It’s always easier to make a dress smaller than to make a dress bigger. So be patient and it’ll turn out just right 🙂

don’t stress too much about it being altered down, my dress is a size 10 because of my hips, but I’m a size 4 on top, so it was altered down quite a bit… they tapered it at all the seams and sewed the cups to sit against my body since the large size resulted in some gapping at the bust

I ordered a sample dress on a whim because it had been discontinued and was my only chance at my dream dress. It was a size 6. I’m a 0 or maybe 2. It was also chiffon, a very hard material to work with. It was huge all over, actually fell off me. My seamstress worked her magic and the dress fits amazing now. They know what they’re doing!

It will be ok. My dress was a 12, I am a 2, and after 4 fittings, it now fits perfectly. It can be done. I went through a period of doubt after every fitting when I was away from my dress, but the final product is great (even after accidentally losing 10 lbs…long story).

I think seamstresses are seriously miracle workers! I bought a sz 10 a line and had it altered to a sz 2 slim aline – she managed to make it a mermaid, but i didn’t like that shape on me as much and let it back out.
