Yes, you probably want to wait on alterations.  I’m a Sept bride, and my dress came in last month.  I brought it home, and their advice was to wait for 6-8 weeks before the wedding.  This is because you want to avoid as much weight fluctuation as possible and, as a result, the best fit you can get!  Take her home and do the alterations later. 🙂

@DTF1983: My dress came in in July.  I took mine home for a long time and did alterations around late January.  I definitely ran to try it on when it came in, I couldn’t wait! And I wanted to make sure my alterations were done as close to the wedding as possible in case anything changed (shoes, weight, etc) plus I wanted it with me so I always knew that it was in a safe place (that sounds stupid but I had fears of a fire at the bridal shop, someone just throwing it around, putting it in too light of an area and it yellowing or something like that).

it doesnt hurt to take it home and wait it out – you wont want to have to pay for additional alterations when the wedding gets closer.

My dress came in WAY earlier than expected, and the store also told me 6-8 weeks. They advised against doing alterations too early to avoid problems with losing or gaining weight. I might just call the alterations person they recommended to confirm when I should check back to make an appointment. Right now my dress is just sitting in my Future In-Laws house in a closet and it will probably just sit there until the fall!

When my dress came in, I went to the store to make my final payment and try it on.

Then you get to take it home! I personally didn’t want to have it at home, so I had the shop keep it in their storage for me.

As for alterations, I booked my appointment yesterday, so I’ll just go pick up my dress before that date. My wedding is september 10th, and I am starting the alterations July 14th.

You can start booking an appointment now, but you don’t have to get it altered right now!

This is a great question! I am planning on getting my alterations done right away because it is something I can cross of my list. I have always been a size 0 (even right after the birth of my daughter) so I know I won’t have any weight issues and I already have my shoes. After the alterations I am just going to leave the dress at the shop because if I brought it home with me, I would try it on way too much lol

The more alterations you have to do the more expensive it gets, so I would definitely wait until you’re as a close to how you’ll look on your wedding day as you can get.

6-8 weeks before the wedding is usually the best time to do alterations. So if your weddding is in Oct, the earliest you should have alterations is august.
