I got engaged on wednesday! (eeeeek!!!) and on friday, my best friend called and offered me her dress…
here’s the back story:
she was engaged 2 years ago to be married. he had the ring, she had the dress, they had the wedding planned, and whole nine yards. they were going to be married shortly after his birthday but he died at the birthday party :,( he drowned in the river with my bestie watching. the dress has not been moved from the back of her closet door and his proposal letter hangs framed on her wall.
God has done massive healing in her heart and she has come a long way. she is now engaged to a great guy that is super understanding. but naturally she wants to plan the wedding entirely different. She called me friday morning and offered me the dress saying that we all knew each other and that it was time that the dress had some happy memories. The dress is amazing and I could not imagine anything more perfect. She insist she will be honored to see me in it and that it is what he would have wanted.
Im so humbled and honored that she would want me to wear this dress. it really is an answered prayer. in our faith, we have guidelines on our dress and she is of the same faith as MrH and I so it fits the bill. Being sentimental, I would have loved to wear my mother’s dress (bestie knew this) but it was lost somehow through the years and being able to wear this dress, which carries so much sentimental value between myself, my Fiance, her, her Fiance, and our memories of him, just blows me away. We wear the same size in everything except shoes so fit is a non issue but I will be adding a sash and brooch (with her blessing) to put my own touch on the dress.
I know some people on here may see it as a second hand dress, but it has never made it down the aisle and stands for precious memories between us all. I’ll post pics as soon as I move them from my phone to computer.

That’s so sweet and very sad. I’m glad your friend was able to find happiness again. I’m looking forward to the photos of the gown. 🙂

thanks! it was super sweet and she said letting go of that dress felt like a final stepping stone in being ready for her own wedding. the day after we came to agreement over it, she was able to have a blast doing her own dress shopping. 🙂 very strange for us to be planning weddings at the same time and being bridesmaids for each other. lol.

@lilFaithy: That is so special! I bet it will really help her with a lot of emotions too that you’ll be wearing it and knowing how much it means to you.

i am working on getting them! 🙂 think white satin, high neck but wide collar (boat neck i think is what you call it) with embroidery and lite beading, princess seams, lightly flaired skirt, chapel train, row of emroidered buttons from top of the back all the way to the end of the train, and it bustles French style.

My sister lost her SO to drowning a while back. He’d had a seizure while taking a shower and when he fell, he hit his head and his foot covered the drain. It was devastating for all of us. It’s so great that she’s been able to find love again and that you’ve been given such a special dress to wear. Congratulations to both of you on your upcoming weddings.
