I hope you get your cat back. You are being far more calm and rational that I would be in this situation!

You will get your cat back. They both said you will. They even offered to drive the cat to you. They’re not trying to keep the cat. If you take a step back, their focus is on this conversation. Now, no-one on here knows your ability to care for this cat. Perhaps you do a wonderful job. Perhaps you don’t but are unaware that you could improve, or perhaps your mother didn’t, or perhaps your friend is psycho as suggested. But just have the discussion. And enter it open-minded. Perhaps there is something really useful you could learn from the talk, something that you have been overlooking with regards to the cat’s welfare. And perhaps it will turn out that your friend is a psycho and you will just have to humour this couple until they give the cat back. But even if that seems the likely option, don’t humour them from the start. However hard it may be, try your best to go into this talk open-minded, remembering why you were friends and considering that you may actually be about to learn something “crucial”, as they claim. If you can do that, you can be all the more satisfied with yourself if and when she proves to be a psycho.

@frustrated: And also, if they think the welfare problem is you not calling to check on your cat, you can tell them that cats can’t use phones. There is literally zero added to the cat’s welfare by you calling to show you still care. Of course you still care. I’d find it annoying if someone rang me to check on their animals instead of trusting that I hadn’t killed them or anything.

This reminds me of a situation with a dear friend of mine and his kitty a few years back. Trotsky (the kitty in question) was an inside/outside cat who loved to hunt, so he’d go out to a parking lot behind his apartment to catch mice and come back of his own accord. Total bachelor cat, they seriously had a thing going. One day he went missing, and my friend was out of his mind frantic trying to find him. He called everywhere and finally called the SPCA in the neighboring town. Turns out they had him after one of their members picked him up in the parking lot. My friend called the woman who had him and was given a long lecture and told “I’m not sure I want to give him back. You see, I’ve grown attached to this cat.”
My friend was like “…give me back my cat!!!!! You kidnapped him from his familiar hunting grounds!!!”.
